Default Strategy when offering a price?

I will be going into a dealership this weekend to try and buy my first car. I already know the type of car, how many miles, and the price. I will be making payments on the car if everything goes well. Now my question is, I know the price which is about $9,500. I have a set price in my head that I'd like to offer, which is $8,000. But I'm not sure I I should say that right away, should I offer a lower price, and work my way up to my amount? If I do that im afraid the dealer might think he can get me to go up even more. What would you all do?

Any advice? I'll more than likely be going in today.

If they say no, walk away.

Ehh so I got there, saw the car and it was beautiful. I tried to not act as interested as I was. Well I didn't get it down to 8k, but we agreed on a price lower than the asking price. Now what has to happen is the owner/dealer will take it to my mechanic today, and if everything goes well I'll be the new owner
