Default Swap GenI engine to 97 eclipse

I have a 97 eclipse.  A friend told me that I should think about swaping a first Gen. engine into it instead of rebuilding the second gen engine that is in it.  I want to do some performace upgrades, maybe turbo.  I want it to be fast but also something I can drive on a daily basis.  Does anyone know about doing this kind of swap.  Does it bolt right up?  Is the first gen engine much easier/better to fix up?
Thanks.
