Default How does the 1-4 skip shift work?

I hear the term being thrown around a lot for the Vette and IIRC the F-Bodys, but I never understood what the hell the 1-4 skip shift was and how it worked. Can someone explain por favor?

basically, unless youre really gunning the car with foot to the floor, it wont let you shift out of 1st into2nd, but you have 2 shift into 4th. this helps gms overall cafe mileage average #s because if youre shifting into 4th from 1st youre running lower rpms and lower mpg. i couldnt live with it.

I hated it and thought it was pointless but from what i know, like you said, it had to do mainly for the gas guzzler tax. They didnt want to add more money to the car and so they made the skip shift. When you are at first gear and shifting to second at around 4k rpm, it wont let you shift to second so you either have two choices....you either shift to fourth and then into second or just put it in neutral for a while till rpms are back at 2-3k and then shift to second. Getting rid of it only costs 20 dollars for the part and 10 minutes to install.

So its really cheap to have the removed? I know the Z06 my buddy has does not have that issue going on. Shit the thought didn't even occur to me and I doubt him either.

If your applying less than 20% throttle (I think) and the RPMs are under 2100 there is a light in the Corvette's dash that comes on. Pretty much locks out 2nd gear so when you shift down it redirects the knob to 4th. Annoying but hardly worth messing with. Just give it a little more gas and get to 2200 RPM and you can shift to second. If you're really just puttering around, the car has enough torque that you won't mind going to 4th. They did do this for gas consumption reasons.

The 1-4 Shift eliminator kit is only $20 as someone here mentioned and easy to fix. Just be aware there are other vendors out there selling the same thing for as high as $60. It doesn't bother me too much so I haven't installed one in my Corvette.

Cheers
