Default I've got a GSX in the driveway...

'95 Eclipse, Red with grey leather and 85k miles on it. There is wear and tear in the front I assume from his highway miles. Nothing major though... I don't feel it shifts quite as nice as other GSXs I've drove. I'm not sure if that is due to the year or this guys driving anyway I think I could work that out I'm sure. I'm not going to say the price but I think it is rather high and I'll talk to him about it if I do buy it. Anyway I'm going to check out a '96 TSi AWD Wed, with 98k miles at a dealership. It has slight modifications and a brand new turbo, so I don't know about it either. I'd rather buy it stock...

It's been impossible for me to find a '94 Tsi or GSX... So I've just gone to look at early 2nd generations. I'm really not into the looks.[comp]

The 96 GSX with that new turbo could be a good pick. At least you know it's been replaced. And those factory turbo units are expensive!

Yep, crankwalk. The best IIRC is the '93 which was the first of the 2nd generation cars with the 1st generation motor. If you get a 2nd gen, it's a matter of time before the crank starts doing the boogaloo. Might not be today, might not be tomorrow, but when it starts, you need a new block/crank/bearings depending on how bad it gets and how far you drive it.

Magnus Motorsports has the solution - the oil jets on the crank were remade with sprung ball bearings, and these are the jets that are trained directly on the crank bearings. They get clogged or the oil pressure's a little low, and you won't get enough oil on the face of the bearings. I think you know what happens next.

Buyer beware. And the interior of mine was cheaper by far than my Pontiac. The interior gaps were big enough that I'd store books in them.

So, it was a major design flaw? Sounds like they tried to make a cheap version of a dry sump engine.

you're pretty much full of it there man..

first off, the 95 was the first year of the second gen. 90-91 was the early 1st gen, 92-94 was the late 1st gen with the non-flip up headlights, and 95-99 was the second gen bodystyle. the best year is the 94, as it has the best everything.. ( tranny, pistons, rear end, head, blow off valve ). there was no 2g car with a 1g motor.. not ever, i dont know where you got that crazy idea from.

crank walk is not all that common of a problem, it doesnt happen to everyone, not even 10% of cars end up dying from crankwalk, so stop making the problem out to be worse than it is.

and your comments on the interior are insane to say the least..i mean, its no mercedes interior, but worse than your pontiac? get real man.. ive had an eclipse gsx (98), and worked on many more of the cars than you have im sure.. and ive never seen anything with an interior as bad as you say..

The interior is horrible compared to my Formula. Sorry.

Regarding the year, I wasn't sure what year. IIRC = If I Recall Correctly. It's coming back to me now the years, but I did just own the one... I was not all that involved with my Talon though, because other than the AWD, I didn't really like the car much. Lots of rattles, huge interior gaps, crappy stereo, crummy shifter, didn't care for the seats much, just reasonable power (rectifiable, I know), poor suspension adjustability (not that I tried), rust in places where there shouldn't be any...

The guy that has it now had to replace nine intake valves and two exhaust valves, as well as have his heads touched up after starting it and having the timing belt snap after only 35K on it. Oddly enough, the same thing happened to his Z24 Cavalier about five years ago except it had 3x the miles and he was driving it when it happened. Anecdotal, I know.

Regarding crankwalk - it's a matter of time. There is a design flaw in the motor, it will eventually happen to most or all of them. According to Magnus Motorsports, it's all 2nd gen motors.

The quality of the Eclipse/Talon is poor. The stereo is shitty and the shifter sure as hell is no Celica GT-S. I don't know to much about the suspension adjustability for it.

While all of those things mean something to me I'm not too worried as an adverage buyer should be. Simply because I don't plan to have the back seat long and the two front seats will be swapped. Audio wise I don't know yet... I just want to go fast.. Plus it will be easy to get rid of that rubbery shifter.

Magnus did say they think they may have found an answer to the problem didn't they? To machine the 1g oil squirters and block the 2g oil squirters passage...

Hmmph ****...

Yes, they're retrofitting the 1G oil squirters. Time is needed to make sure that the solution is a working one, however.
