LT1 wont start??

Ok, so about 3 months ago. my 1996 firebird trans am suddenly would die on me, then sometimes it would start back up, run fine for a little while then shut off and not start back up. or it would crank and crank, then when i stoped turning the key it would backfire like 2 or 3 times. soo, ofcourse first i thought opti-spark, so i got a brand new one and put it in, and got the same results. it would crank and crank but when i would stop turning it over it would either do nothing or almost act like it would want to start, or backfire. i know i have good fuel pressure(50llbs to the rail) and i have checked for spark at the plugs. then i took the plugs out and they were wet with fuel. thats when i thought who knows maybe my cam chain jumped. so i checked that and the timing marks are lined up perfect. now i am next to clueless. although one of my friends told me its possible my coil could be going bad. and isnt producing a powerful spark for it to fire under compression? but i am out oF ideas. so if anyone has any ideas, i would really appreciate it. for some reason i want to say fuel pressure regulator. fuel getting past into a vacuum line or ... wtf. idk maybe im blowing smoke out of my ass.

i would say timing or fireing order if your plugs are wet its getting fuel it sounds like its not getting spark in the plug or not at the right time

It could be a bad crankshaft position or camshaft position sensor.

there wouldnt be spark at all if either of those were inoperable, i believe...i could be wrong.

It depends on which crankshaft position sensor it is. The good new is they can be tested without being taken off the car.

I also have the same problem as the 96.. i have a 1994 caprice with lt1... i was just bout 2 check timing chain untill i read this guy with the same problem///

Number one problem for the 93-94 LT1 is that coolant will leak from the water pump and get into the distributor and it won't start.
