how do they do it?

this is a total noob question but i gotta ask.
when i see cars on the drag they rev their engines really high and then BAM! they take off!

how do they do it? isnt it bad for your car to stay on the brakes while you rev? and going from neutral to drive while u rev is terribleeee isnt it?

help haha...?
