'98 Isuzu Amigo Engine issue

My son has a 1998 Isuzu Amigo with the 2.2l 4 cylinder in it. He was driving to work the other day when the timing belt popped. The idler wheel literally melted to the case!
Anyway, I'm sure he probably tried to start it, bad news, as he probably bent the valves and messed up the head.
My question is do I replace the head, or should I look at replacing the whole motor? There is a HUGE cost difference in those choices.

headjob will run about 600-800, plus posible piston damage, and other small things, the whole thing mighg run you about 1.5g, rebuilt engine will run about 2.5 3g alone plus labor.

Take it apart and inspect the damage first. You should probably have the head job and then bore out the valve guides and install oversized valves. It's a lot of work if you do it yourself, I hope you know what you're doing.

Oh, and your son trying to start it wouldnt have hurt anything, if the timing belt snaps and the car is in gear, the crank is going to keep turning and the valves would have been bet already anyway.

Are those the chevy 2.2l engines? if so they are littereally everywhere. They practically grow on trees.
