A quick fact on "Twin Turbo" vs. "Sequential Turbo" Setups

OK lately a lot of people I've been talking to in regards to my RX-7 all say "oh yea that thing has a twin turbo setup right?"

When I mention the term sequential no one has an idea what I'm talking about. Here is a brief run down of what each really means:

Twin Turbo Setup = Two identical turbos running in parallel.

Sequential Turbo Setup = Two turbos (usually run in-line) one which is smaller with less lag that spools up quicker and provide power in the lower RPM range, and the secondary larger turbo that spools up to provide bigger boost and more power at the higher RPM range.

Now a sequential setup is a bit more difficult to show in a picture, so I'm going to attach several different motors that are sequential setups, along with a picture of the stock sequential turbo setup off of an RX-7

you are correct. most facotry car are sequential turbos....one smaller turbo to spool up a bigger turbo........but the problem is 2 smaller twin turbos will spool quicker than 1 big one. AND if you convert a sequential turbo setup like in your rx to a single big turbo your gunna get more power outof it and the car WILL be faster in all aspects, but itl take a higer rpm to spool

yah but boost lag sucks, I thought it wouldn't bother me that bad when I switched out my turbo, and even tho the boost lag with my new turbo wasn't significantly higher it is still noticable, and makes me want to buy a new one with quicker spool up

you wouldn't think it's such a hard concept to get, but some people just don't. not like the word for what it is(sequential) should actually give you enough informantion right there to figure it out
