How-To: Remove "C" clip axels for repair and maintence –

Here is a little background on removing "C" clip style axels from a differential. This particular one here is an open carrier in a leaf spring rear end.
Here is where we start
You will notice the though bolt that retains the carrier cross pin I have removed it allready here you see as I start to pull it out. This retains the carrier cross pin that holds the cross gearing inside the differential.

Removing the main caps
With the caps removed you notice the main axel inner bearings now exposed the races are visiable and clean
Cose up of the race and the cross pin you will again note is gone and on the side
Ahh there are the clips!
Pushing in on the axels will help to free up the clips for removal now that the cross pin has been removed

A magnet becomes a neccisary tool to help get the clips out without dropping or loosing them in the rear end as you move along and simply giving them a tug out they come nice and easy
And as simple as that out come the axels!
Repeat on both sides and you are set!

Why did you remove the bearing main caps if you were only removing the axles?

I actually took it all apart becuase I took that Open dif and replaced a locker I had gotten in trade and once I got my hands on the carrier I was too greasy to touch the camera so I just said the heck with it and made the thread for removing the c clips.

That was clean! How about to take out all the insides to replace with new ones? For a Chevy Suburban 4 x 4. Diff went out trying to save some money and do it my self. Any advice??
