How to know a Used Car Dealer is Reputable?
How to know a Used Car Dealer is Reputable?

Unfortunately, over the years used car dealers have gained a reputation for being not so honourable, but that is changing in today’s marketplace. Today the used car dealer is more accountable and much more upfront about the vehicles he/she is offering for sale.

Some steps to judge a used cars salesperson are:

1. Trust Your Gut Feeling: Chances are if you speak to this person and you do not feel leery or anxious, plus your stomach doesn’t do the wave, move on to the next step.

2. Trust Your Instincts: Having spoken to the salesperson for a while, do you feel comfortable talking with them, or uneasy and on edge. Does the salesperson sound sincere and honest? Does the salesperson look directly at you when talking?

3. Dealership Timeline: How long has this dealership been in business? Chances are if it is a long time, they are doing something right. If they have been there for years, chances are they have repeat business, and customers only come back when satisfied and happy, especially with the choice of dealerships available in today’s market.

4. Do Research: Check with your BBB, Better Business Bureau, check on the internet under “Dealership reviews” and see what others have had to say about them, and remember to ask family and friends, as word of mouth is like a gift in hand. Before visiting any dealership, do your homework! If you live in New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, type the following into your search engine: used cars in New York; used cars in Los Angeles; or used cars in Chicago. This will give you a place to start your search for reputable dealerships.

5. Dealership Condition: When you first visit a dealership, check out its physical condition. It is neat, clean, and orderly. Does it look professional? Is the landscaping maintained? Are the windows and cars clean? Do the salespeople present a professional and polished appearance? Are the salespeople friendly and courteous? Are the salespeople attentive and do they listen when you talk, instead of interrupting and talking over you? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, you have most likely found a reputable dealership.

6. Never Sweat It: Last, but not least, never let salespeople make you feel like you are under pressure. If you have done all the above and feel you have found a reputable dealership, but the salesperson assigned to you makes you feel as though you must do something, don’t sweat it, walk away or ask for another salesperson. Always remember the salesperson is there for your convenience, and it is up to you who you work with, and what final decisions you make; after all, there are hundreds of dealerships with cars for sale.
