Hi. 69 vet has problem (sometimes)getting into gear, and will even jump out of 4th. Manual stick seem to be loose and is even hard to get into reverse. Any suggestions on problem, or other links that might be helpful?? All comments welcome.

HOw many miles is on the transmission?

A sloppy gearbox is most commonly a result of worn out bushings. The fact that you have trouble getting it into reverse might also be bushings, but could be synchros or the tranny is just bad and needs rebuilt/overhauled.

First make sure the bolts holding the shifter to the side of the transmission are tight. Next check the linkage bushings for wear. If they are loose, replace them. :beerchug:

it sounds more like synchros if it jumps out of gear and doesn't go into reverse, though I'd think it would jump out of 1st if reverse was chewed up

I've run into this problem twice in 90,000 miles, along with my pistons needing to be replaced (2000 civic...honda crap, never reved it over 5K and shift slowly and carefully through its life) it was my daily driver until i got fed up with it falling apart

who did you let drive it that doesn't know how to? or how many miles are on it?
