Hey guys and gals, I'm new here and I'm also new to owning my own car. I just purchased a 1996 Chevy Beretta Z26 and I just installed a new intake filter. Its a Spectre Intake Filter. So what I did was, took out the old filter including the housing for it, not sure what the correct terminology is. Now I have this intake filter just sorta hangin' around but it doesn't look bad really. I'm just wondering if you have a better suggestion for me so I can get as much use out of this new part as possible, and/or if this situation is even going to be harmful in the future. I will say the car sounds a lot better when accelerating now, and I understand I'll get better MPG. But I can upload pics of what my engine compartment and everything looks like if you wish to see it. Thanks in advance!!!

I'll explain better....
I bought a new Air Filter, made by Spectre
I installed it this morning
I'm wondering if I should find a way to keep it level instead of just having it hang around
And if you need further explanation I'll just post a picture for you. Thanks again :)
Maybe look the part up, you'll know what I mean. The Air Filter has no housing unit like a stock filter does.
no i really dont get what you mean. why would you remove the housing?
i am so confused... how is the filter in there? its just chillin over the intake or what!
lol.

I had a 94 Gt few years back.
sounds like you removed the air box and installed a cone filter. Pointless, on a beretta. Mine was even the 3.1 v6 and I kept it stock except for a headunit. I also bought it for 600 bucks and only had it for about a year.

Yes yes yes, I'm sorry. I should have mentioned it was a Cone Filter. My apologies. Might you explain why its pointless? I'm sort of a nimrod when it comes to car stuff. That's why I love going to these forums, car nuts know all the fun stuff. :)
I bought mine in pristine condition, not a lick of rust on it. Its been garaged for about 5 years because the guy lost his license so it only has 75K miles on it and its in great condition. I paid much more then 600 for it, but it retails for 3K still. I paid about 2K bucks.

I had a '90 beretta GT 3.1 V6 couple years ago.
I followed a DIY from a beretta forum on how to take a ebay intake for a Honda CRX, makes some modifications to the piping and made a CAI behind the bumper.
Just letting the intake sit in the engine bay just sucks up hot air.

I'll help you out...
those cone filters rarely do anything really BUT make it sound louder because the stock filter box has baffles or actual boxes off the filter piping to catch the sound/vibrations like a muffler
The cone filters allow more air to flow and if its a cheep one less filtration... if it goes straight into the intake its unrestricted unlike the stock filter, but an unmodified 3.1 can't use any more air so you might just be hurting your performance... and there can be some improvement if you pipe it for some ram air... just don't make the pipe too big (in diameter) or you'll have a resonance problem and hurt your performance, the more bends and the longer the pipe the slower the air will go
you want the filter to be nice and tight... if you can put it right on top of the map sensor (if its plastic be careful, and you can carefully clean it with some gasoline and a soft toothbrush or Q tips) which would get mostly cold air for the most part when you're moving on the 3.1 the exhaust is right under it but the way the air flows its mostly taking air from the radiator, cold air allows more power but warm air allows better emissions/fuel economy
if you need some space to get the filter on tight just get the spectre intake pipes, or some exhaust pipe that's the same diameter as the filter/map... make sure its all clamped with some kind of rubber between the pipes (spectre makes those too.. they're overpriced but it works)
best of all it'll look like a pretty ricer but it wont sound like my lawnmower XD

I really appreciate the help bud, your explanations were very clear. I think what I'm going to do is post a picture here soon of how my engine compartment, with the Cone Filter installed, is all situated. That way you and others could help me plan a fix for my possible performance loss. I'd greatly appreciate it, I'll take pictures and stuff and we'll get this all worked out.
If anything, assuming the cone is really a bad idea, I'll just switch back to the other type of filter but I'll get a higher performance one than the cheap ones at Wally World. Also I was going to get a cooler muffler installed at some point with the help of a friend of mine, and that'll make it sound better. I don't really want a fart can on it, because its a sports car and not a rice burner, but I want to make it as bad ass as I can, while also keeping it well maintained, Thanks again!
I've got plenty of other stuff to ask about regarding cosmetic stuff on the vehicle, but I might wait and post that later.

on a V6 like that you don't want to go bigger than 3 on a single pipe exhaust, I could suggest a few mufflers, buut if you look on youtube at some guys with a 3.1 or 3.4 and they say which muffler/exhaust they have that you're listening to find one you like and i'll make some more suggestions...
please don't get a fart can, if anything stick a Folgers coffee can on the end for laughs

Lol! That'd be awesome! No not really, but I was going to make a Spoiler for a friend out of a broken metal rack and a card board box, so who knows what'll happen! I deffinetly do NOT want a fart can, I hate cars that sound like that...i.e. my friends cars....So I just want something classy lol, something sporty. Crud if you could link me anything or PM me that'd be great! i'll do a little research like you said.

What'd it sound like? Lol I don't think I'll break mine out of curiosity, but I have been known to fail in my self control....we'll see
I'l look up the Magnaflow, you hit it right on the money as far as what I want dude. Subtle, but noticably different.

it sounded loud. no rasp or any of that shit. no lost of torque as it was well after the cat and had enough back pressure. It wasnt my "cup of tea" but it wasnt bad and I didnt have to replace the muffler lol!! I never fixed it as I bought it for only 600 and didnt give a shit about the exhaust and like i've said, had it for about a year. If I bought a newer car and that happen, I'd get all new piping and etc.

Very nice. I'm looking at a Magnaflow, I hear they are very reputable? If you have any other brands, styles, etc that you could help me out with that'd be great. I went on Youtube as instructed but the MAgnaflow exhausts seem really expensive. Any places I could look that you personally visit would be sweeeeet. I really want to get a new Muffler/exhaust. I just dont' want it TOO loud, I want it to still sound sporty, but not like a fart can.

go to a muffler shop and have them whip you up a system with a magnaflow muffler.
