I just purchased a 1991 cavalier it runed like a top for the first few days I had it and then it started missing kinda bad and it would chug untill it died and when it was chugging I would try and give it gas and it wouldnt take it!... it didnt do anything for a couple days and now it's doing it agian!.... anyone got any clues on what it could be?..... I dont wanna take it to a garage and spend 4-500 dollars on it enless I dont have any other option! please if anyone knows what the problem might be let me know!

Plugs, wires, fuel filter?

Try the routine maint. stuff. Can't hurt even if that's not the problem.

Thanx alot, I have changed the spark plugs and the wires, and air filter but have not changed the fuel filter but... I thought that if it was the fuel filter it would do it all the time?

Not necessarily... plus, it seems like it's happening pretty often from the way you describe it. Could have even taken the fuel pump along with it, but then you'd really be running into some issues.

well this morning on the way home from work I stoped to check my mail and left it running! when I came out it had died and when I tryed to start it back it would start and start spudering and then die! and then it wouldnt start back at all!... I dont know anything about cars at all!... so this guy I knew came over and took the lid off the air filter and ask me to try and start it and then he said that It wasnt getting any gas!... and he said it could be the fuel pump! so I got a ride home and went back to check on it and it started right up!... so I dont know what the problem is!... I'm getting really aggravated with it tho.... cause I dont know what it is!

When you looked at the car, did you test drive it alot? Wonder if the seller did some temp fix to it just to sell it.

I test drove it for 30 minutes or so and it ran fine!.... and ran fine for the first week and then it started missing a lil, and I thouhgt I had gotten some bad gas or something, so I ran that tank out and filled it up agian, and put some fuel injecter cleaner in it and it run great for that tank of gas and then i filled it up again and it started the same thing agian! so IDK I'm out of options at this point... I'm sure it something simple but like I said i know nothing about cars so.... I'm clueless at this point!

sounds like your fuel pump is slowly going out. a lot of times a fuel pump will go out slowly and when the car warms on up then it will act spastic and do strange things.

^ yep, i agree. my old car did that too. the fuel filter was almost completely rusted through/clogged, so i'm guessing that it took out my fuel pump. also, it had 120,000 miles, and stuff doesnt last forever
