99 Blazer, 4.3, 4wd, I've owned it 3 yrs. This Blazer has a security feature I'd never heard of before. If you just turn the key, it doesn't activate the solenoid/starter. Everything else works. In order to start it, you have to put the left turn signal on. According to the CARFAX report when I bought it, it was a rental car in California at one time. Perhaps it was a feature they added. Anybody seen this before? I would like to disable it. Thanx, Mike

it's not unheard of, and actually pretty smart.

as for disabling it, you'll need to access the wiring in the steering column and at the ignition switch. it should appear obvious what has been modified from factory, but there's a wire going from the ignition to the signal stalk, which is currently serving as an immobilizer.

personally, i'd leave it in place.

Thanx. The reason I feel the need to disable it is that I suspect it is causing other problems. For the last two weeks, the Blazer doesn't always start. Turn the key and nothing. All the lights, dashlights, radio, etc. but nothing from the starter. Not even a click. New battery, alternator and starter. Also neg. bat. cable. And there doesn't seem to be a pattern (after a short trip, cold weather, etc.). The one thing that makes me suspect the security feature is that when it doesn't start, the left turn signal flashes double time, while the right signal seems normal. Thanx again, Mike

mike25 ,

I have a 1991 olds with the same feature and the exact the same problems you are experience. Just wondering if you disconnect the wires and does it work?

maybe the turn signal relay is going bad if it is flashing fast and the right side sems to be working just fine. I would start by replacing that :D

I say remove it and install a fuel cut-off switch hidden somewhere.
