Pretty much what probably happened was you threw your valves into your pistons and block and probaby bent most/all of your valves along with messin up your pistons. To be honest, get a different car or if you know how to transplant engines, get a different one, but i would go with the first one.

Depends whether or not it's an interference engine. If so, and I think it is, you can expect results like mitsu said. And the solutions.

get a new motor, yours is done.

it is an interferance engine.

All Mitsubishis have interference engines (except that new Outlander's V6 and the new Lancer's 4-banger), so yours is toast. You were supposed to replace the belt at 105,000. Just curious, but how long did you wait?

yeah i agree, u probably bent the piss out of your valves and probably messed up your pistons from them hitting the valves

My timing belt went and had to replace 8 of the valves. No big deal. Pull the head and send to a machine shop to "refresh". Prol run you $300 tops for the head w/ parts + an OEM gasket ($45) and the timing belt kit (belt, auto-tensioner, pulley, balance shaft belt) $150 and ~$500 labor (head re/re and timing belt). Would also highly suggest replacing your water pump at the same time as the extra labor is near nil at that point and is 18years old.

Dont forget about the potential of having bent valve guides. You may have to have them bored out and press-fit in new ones or install over sized valves.

It sounds like you'll have to get a new motor. I'd take it in an get an estimate and see what the mechanic says.

is it the 420A? if so... just burn the car...not worth working on that shit hole of a Chrysler motor.

Edit, just looked it up, GS and lower is a 420A, the spyder is a 4G64 and the turbos are 4G63's...If it's a non spyder non turbo....pitch the bitch it won't be worth fixing.

I have an old Mitsu work beater with the 2.0 ltr sohc, and i think all Mitsu engines are interferance engines.Mitsu runs two timing belts, the main belt and whats called a balance belt.Anyways, the valves probably smacked the pistons, and depending how bad, could have just bent some valves all the way to trashing the engine including the pistons and cylinder walls.Only way to tell is to disassemble the engine (pull the head) and look.

heres a scary thought. my avenger has over 166 k miles on it and ive got no clue if its ever had a timing belt done. Does anyone know if a timing belt wil give visibile or audible signs of wear?

Depends on how bad the damage is.Valves smacking pistons isnt an ideal situation.Sometimes the pistons can get ruined in the process,or the cylinder walls severely scraped if a valve breaks off and is floating around in the cylider, while the piston is still travelling up and down.Like someone previous said, pull the head and look,it's the only way to determine the severity of the damage.

Alright. What I was refering to originaly was the belt itself. like do they crack and fray?
