Weld the rear diff. Problem solved.

Actually, it's more like; Weld the rear diff. Problem created!

Welding the rear spider or differential gears creates a locked rear axle in which BOTH rear wheels will ALWAYS turn at the same speed - going straight and through turns - which will result in dragging one tire through the turn, and a tendency towards severe understeer in the turns.

A Positraction® (Equa-lock®, Twin-track®, etc.) is a limited slip rear axle and it has centrifugally-operated clutches inside that distribute power to the wheel that has traction while allowing the rear wheels to turn at different speeds when negotiating a turn.

Even a Detroit Locker® which locks the two wheels together in straight-ahead mode has a ratchet system that allows the two wheels to turn at different speeds while going around a corner.

Trying to run a locked rear axle on the street is dangerous. It could cause the vehicle to not turn on a wet road with the rear axle driving the vehicle straight despite the position of the front wheels.

If you cannot find a limited slip rear carrier for your specific rear axle, you might consider swapping another axle into the truck - such as the Ford eight-inch or nine-inch. There is a virtually unlimited supply of gears, limited-slip and locking carriers, and accessories for the Ford rear axles.
