View Full Version : Wow the 3G GTS is fast!
I just got my Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GTS back from the shop after repairing the clutch. When I first bought it I thought it was okay but nothing special, a bit faster than my Ford Escort maybe, but then after repairing the clutch which was slipping when I bought it I was in for a pleasant surprise. That car easily overtakes 90% of the cars out there on the road and I never have to floor the accelerator for day-to-day driving (I had to do that with my Ford Escort from time to time). I have not yet taken it down to the track but I can't wait to do so! What a great car.

Wow, you think that is fast?
Its not bad, I have the GTS version. I think the 0-60 is just over 6 seconds which is 1 sec faster than my old Ford Escort ZX2 and about 1 second slower than the Mustang GT. Okay I would have preferred a Mustang GT in terms of performance but the price/handling/performance combination of the Eclipse Spyder is very good.

no it's really not....
Well I searched high and low and I couldn't find anything that came close.
Camaros (never been in one but from reputation) - faster but pricier, about 50% ($5k) more and even more expensive for convertible.
Ford Mustang GT - faster, not as fast as Camaro. Not as expensive as Camaro but still more expensive than the eclipse, and usually you get one with more miles so life expectancy of the engine is shorter (and Ford engines are not as reliable as Japanese ones)
S2000 - slightly more expensive, only 2 seats. Hard as heck to find one for a good price.
Civic Si - not as fast, almost the same price, and not convertible.
Audi TT - slightly more expensive, not as fast (but is a convertible though)
I'm not even comparing with Porsche Boxster, Corvette, Pontiac Solstice GXP, Subaru WRX STI, Lancer Evolution, or any of the other cars that are just way out of the price range.
I know its not the best car but for what it costs (around 10 grand + repairs) its a good compromise.

Yah but how much did your hemi truck cost? If I had $30,000 of course I could have gotten something better.

Oh my bad, still thats very decent for the car don't you think? My 1999 Ford Escort ZX2 (fully automatic tranny) had a 0-60 of over 7 seconds (I took the Escort to the drag strip, and on average, I did 69mph trap speed with a 19.8 seconds time.) So for me this is a huge improvement.
Edit: the stupid track is closed until mid-December for whatever reason so I haven't had a chance to do a run in my Eclipse. Once I do I will be sure to post, but I am betting it will do better than the Ford.

ha yea i'd say, but you could have gotton a camaro or ta for probably they same price as your gts, unless it either has a lot of miles on it or you just got it for a REALLY good price

The Hemi stickered at 38K. Its a truck, I need something to tow the cars and with a little utilty, I already had plenty of cars (69 firebird and 97 Z28).
Sometimes I wish I would have got an LSx powered truck though, so much easier to make power with and work on, but hey I love the HEMI and its put quite a few mustangs and ricers in there places then when they make excuses Im like, "Well follow me and Ill run home and grab the Z and we can go again":rotf:

Its a 2004 GTS Spyder, with 85k miles. I got it for I think it was $9.5k out the door. I had traded in the Ford Escort for $2k so I guess the true price was $11.5k out the door. Since taxes, plates, and title count for about $1k of that price, I essentially got the car for $10k. I couldn't find a Z28 Camaro anywhere near that price and believe me I tried. Ditto on the Mustang GT, unless it was really high mileage (over 100k) or really old (pre 99, meaning the previous generation x2). Even the MR2 was more expensive (by about $2k). I was being really cheap on this purchase I admit but I have to say I am not really disappointed with it. So far it has been doing really well. I will have to concede that I did have to spend $1300 on the 90000 mile service including a timing belt replacement and $800 on a new clutch. Those hurt but I guess I would have had to do that no matter what second hand vehicle I bought.

but thats high miles for an 04, if it had about 50K miles on it the price would have been close to 16-17k. you could find a couple of camaro z28s or ta's for that price or close to it, or you could have gone on ebay and looked for cobalt ss or srt4s

Alright bad points of the 3g GTS...
-Slow
-Bad gas Mileage
-Can't handle power..
-Can't overtake 90% of the cars on the road..not even a V6 Camaro.
-FWD
Good points
-Styled for women drivers.
Every Eclipse since 1999 has sucked..period.
Alright bad points of the 3g GTS...

The Eclipse goes 60 in 6.8 secs and thats slow? What would you consider the minimum acceleration to be fast then?
-Bad gas Mileage
19/25 mpg. That's pretty average if you ask me.
-Can't handle power..
This I don't know about, maybe it does need better tires since I find that the tires lose friction quite a lot.
-Can't overtake 90% of the cars on the road..not even a V6 Camaro.
90% of the sports cars you mean
-FWD
Okay I would have preferred AWD or RWD

Well one thing I didn't mention is that the Eclipse handles quite well, I can do some pretty fast turns without much body roll. The tires squeal alot tho as mentioned earlier. The other problem with the eclipse you didn't mention is that it has a wide turning radius, that's really the most annoying one for me.

The 3g handles good? I wouldn't know I've never riden in one, or read reveiws on them. I know that 1g has exceptional handling.
Yes I would consider 6.8 to be slow.
I would say it should atleast be quicker than a 5.0 mustang or a Z28 to be considered fast.
And as far as only considering it taking over 90% of sporty cars...Class is what I would do it by, so yeah that's what I ment.

I got my celica for $1,700
Trust me I tried. I almost bought a Mustang actually, for about $7k + taxes, but I was concerned about the drivetrain (98 Mustang GT, with 130k mi on the odo). No point getting the car to have to do a complete engine replacement for a few grand. But if you do a search on Autotrader, unless something majorly has changed since I did my car hunting a month ago, there is not a Mustang GT to be found for any reasonable price unless a) it has some kind of major problem like a title restoration, b) it has a huge amt of miles - see problem above, or c) it is very old, meaning a lot of work needs to be done to fix it up properly. Camaros are even worse, the Z28s start at about $15k iirc. Just way above what I was hoping, if I had $15k I would just have got a Porsche Boxster (which are available for that price here btw). It seems ridiculous that you can get a Boxster for not much more than a Mustang GT but the reason I think is because this is a college town and among the college crowd Mustangs are extremely popular so the dealers don't hold on to them much. And if you think Mustang GT prices are insane wait till you see the price on the Shelby GT500, I think its being sold at a local dealer for $75k. So it isn't that I don't like Mustangs and Camaros but that over here at least, they are more expensive than they should be. And another big problem - for some totally weird reason, it is nearly impossible to get hold of a Camaro with a manual tranny. Or even a Mustang for that matter. I think more than 80% of all the cars I found on web sites and dealer lots had automatic tranny. I actually spoke to a local Camaro owner asking him to explain why and he was as dumbfounded as I (despite the fact the Camaro he was owning had an auto tranny).

Oh well if you consider that the Z28 to be the benchmark for fast then indeed my Eclipse would be slow. I don't think most people use such a fast car as the benchmark, the Z28 is essentially a Corvette since it uses the LS1 engine. For me I would consider Mustang GT and Z28 as superfast, as would most ordinary people. Of course if you spend all day reading car magazines about 600hp cars most of us never see, I suppose they might not seem so incredible.
Oh the handling is great, its not quite as good as a Miata, but it handles turns really well, and I love accelerating through the corners and this car surprises me all the time. Now when I drive a Mustang, I have to deal with the body roll and lack of grip. Never driven a Camaro, I would really like to. I need to find someone who owns one who would actually let me drive :) The Eclipse has an understeer problem but its nothing I can't handle if I am expecting it.

the gs 4 cylinder can actually handle more power than the v6s
and as for the style it's all in your opinion, i think my car looks sporty
[QUOTE=MWCT]the Z28s start at about $15k[QUOTE]
but if your gts actually had good miles on it, say about 50k, the price probably would have been around 16k
Just a quick aside, funny story, every time I take my car out these days some guy wants to race me. It's sometimes funny other times its annoying bec all I want to do is get somewhere. I never race of course, that would be dumb. Today some idiot in a Honda Civic or something was actually going flat out to beat me, and in a lane full of school crossings and a 25 speed limit!!! Needless to say I didn't fall for it but I was relieved that idiot figured out I wasn't gonna race and slowed down before he hit somebody's child. The fastest car that ever tried to race me was a Porsche 911, but I didn't take up the offer. I wonder if I would have won that one, how fast are those cars anyway?

Okay that means that if I wanted a fast car I would have had to turbo my Eclipse, and that would cost $6k so I guess I am going to drive a moderate speed car.
Well at least I am still faster than the SVT Focus, Honda Civic Si, base Mustang, Mini Cooper S, MR2, Hyundai Tiburon GT, Mazda Miata and Pontiac Firebird :)

to the turbo, the only turbos for the 3g eclipse cost most 3k, and i wouldnt bother to turbo your motor, most psi it could handle is about 8 psi, hell my 4 banger can handle more psi than that
and your not faster than the si, mustang, mr2, or the mini s. you might be just AS fast, but not faster
I was comparing the time with the older Mustang, and for the rest of the cars I simply looked up the sticky at the top of the general cars forum: http://www.carforums.net/showthread.php?t=10251
The eclipse is between 15 and 16 on the 1/4 miles from most places I looked up, but I will have to take it down to the dragstrip to see what mine can do; my local dragstrip has been closed for a while.
