View Full Version : 98 Eclipse engine swap

I have a 98 eclipse GS that has a leak in its valves. My mechanic told me that it would cost almost as much to repair as it would to replace the entire engine. Since I was already interested in doing a swap, now seems like a good time, but I would like to get some ideas as to what engines to look at. I would like a good amount of power, but don't want to have to alter to much to get the engine to fit. I have a 98 eclipse GS 2.0 liter non-turbo, 5-speed manual, and any ideas as to good engine options would be appreciated. I was hoping for something with mid 200 or better horses. Thanks

drop in the turbocharged engine that was available in your car. the 2.0l 4G63.

it'll take some work, since that engine certainly didn't put out mid-200hp stock.

Thanks, I had been thinking about that engine, seems to be a real good performer for its size, and not a big deal that its not that powerful, I plan to put some time and money into the car over the next few years anyway. Any ideas of where I might be able to find one?

Try any DSM forums. I know there is a lot more work dropping in a Turbo 4g63 then just putting the engine in. Things in the engine bay need to be relocated and moved and I believe you may also need a turbo tranny as well.

Make sure if you go 4g63, get a 6bolt one. 7bolts are prone to crankwalk and other problems. My 7bolt shit the bed by throwing a rod bearing. I'm sure if you talk to anyone who has any interest in DSMs will tell you the same thing about 7bolts. STAY AWAY.

PS: Don't trust a mechanic. Go on some DSM-specific forums and find a DSM guru (my boyfriend is one of them.) They can tell you exactly what parts you need and a price range for them.

Go to VFAQ.com. Its a GREAT DSM resource. For any of your questions. . (Edit, the article I posted is only for swapping pre-95 dsms. opps) Also check DSMtuners.com and DSMtalk.com.

hey, thanks for the advice, I'll make sure I look for a 6 bolt, and I'll definetly have to look into what work is needed. On another note, any ideas on the plausability of droping a s2000 engine in an eclipse?

this engine seems to be the range I am looking for, and in my experience honda makes a good product, any ideas if it could be done realistically?

its plausible to put an s2000 motor into an eclipse just be prepared to spend money out the ass to do it. seeing how you have a fwd mitsu and that that motor is a honda that is only used in rwd platform. it stupid and not worth it.

+1 on the 6 bolt, it will basically come out of any of the DSM pre-april 92. I'd stay with the 4g63 power house, or you can get a 7 bolt and build it. If you do the crank it should be just as good as the 6-bolt. I'd suggest thaking the block, pistons, crank, get the head ported, head studs (so you can push more than 20PSI) Lifters (3 gen work the best no tick) cams. Get an evo3 Big 16g turbo, either get the FP cast manifold, or the evo3 manifold, or a ported 2nd gen mani. 3" turbo back & FMIC. I'd also do the clutch and flywheel and get your tranny built by jack's transmissions. (just my 2 cents)

Also if you want to learn more about the 6 bolts going in your car, join the yahoo mail group "1g in a 2g"

why would you want to go through all that bs? it won't just drop in. how much skill and knowledge do you have?

it would be best to just get the turbo 6 bolt like was suggested
