I just bought a 87 Z28 Camaro. I need to get a tune up on it before I start actually driving it, ill get that in a couple days, then after I get a job I will get it painted. The car hasen't been driven in probably 2-3 years. Couple questions, first, what could I do to help remove rust? Second, what would be a good investment for this car? Also, about how much would a tune up cost and about how much for a paint job?

1st: Tune it up and make sure it is running correctly and not leaking or smoking.

2nd: Looks don't make a car go. Save the paint for last.

Well I still gotta get rid of the rust before it spreads, Im getting a tune up in a couple days so thats not a problem, but if I should save the paint for last what else should I invest in it? I dont really plan on racing or anything except maybe a couple races with friends down at the speed way so I dont wanna buy anything super expensive for that purpose.

Rust could be worse but it is pretty bad, but it hasnt moved in 2 years or more. I probably got 7-8 months left around here, I plan on getting a full time job in the next month, I gotta pay back my mom for the car and the tune up im getting within the week and then the rest of the time I work the money will probably go towards fixing up the car so I can hopefully have something some what nice to drive when I get back.

Wait for Hemi and Cyco to reply. They will be the guys who will save your cars life i should guess. Nothing against 57th, of course, but they are buffs on domestic brands. A Camaro is right up their ally so i'll forward this to them.

As for me, well, have you even started it yet?

for rust removal/care, look up POR-15. they make a cleaner and sealer for rust. use it, it works. as for the motor, whats it doing right now, is it starting, running, idling rough, not doing anything? i barely get on anymore, but ill do what i can.

I havent started anything yet, the battery died, we have one that we will pick up tomorrow then we will get fuses see if that fixes the headlights and tail lights cause those werent working when we picked it up. The motor works once we get it started, sometimes it usually take 2 tries to start it but I've only started it twice and like I said its been two years since its been on, but once I got it on it worked great, quieter then I expected though, not sure if thats good or bad. Only drove it 30 minutes to bring it home. We gotta flush the engine coolant but hopefully they'll do that when we get a tune-up which I got scheduled for tuesday so hopefully Ill have it in my care tuesday night. The rust is pretty band around the driver side door handle, if I try and clean it up a bit the handle isnt gonna fall off is it? Ill try and get some pictures up so you guys will know what Im working with, but I cant install the camera program cause the computer dropped a couple times during the move so Ill try and get it on my other computer and save it to my iPod and put it on here, as a matter of fact ill go do that now.

You bought a third gen? Here ill tell you what to do.

1. dump gas all over it
2. get some matches
3. Light the car on fire
4. Buy a real car

If the rust is just on the door you could always just buy a new(used) door.
