Okay, I have a 2000 ss monte carlo and when you drive on pavement, it has a very slight shimmy back and forth. driving on very smooth pavement (as in was finished yesterday) it seems worse, and it seems worse during hard-ish braking. any clues on to what it is or how to fix it?

Thanks

"back and forth" or "side to side"?

could you be as detailed as possible? is the car drifting off course, the steering feel loose, any unusual vibration?

Could be a tire. The control arms in the back of those cars like to break and crack sometimes too, especially when people put a jack on them. So check those first.

side to side, like if you let go of the steering whell its maybe 2 degrees in either direction. the steering is not loose and thats the only vibe that it makes. also there was a temporary power steering failure for about 20 miles then it came back, and no probs since then. other than the shimmy of course.

have your tires balance, and also have them check your ball joins and tie rods. also have them check your brakes. if the rotors are warped, youll get the shimy during braking, aand if the above mentioned parts are shot, you'll get the shimy during driving.

my 02 monte used to shake coming off the highway..turned down rotors, replaced pads ,done by a mechanic-- still had the issue after a while...i end up solving the problem by getting new rotors and "SOFT?CHEAP" brake pads..no issue since...problem was due to superhard brake pads from gm that wear out rotors/warp them
