Hey everyone! Im new to this site. My girlfriend and I bought a 1999 Mercury Sable LS from a used car dealer here in my area 2 days ago. On the first day the car seemed to run nice and everything worked fine. Yesterday the "Check engine " light came on and the tranny started to slip from time to time. I immediately checked the tranny fluid and all was well. Then today we were driving along and the slipping became worse and worse until finally the car would no longer shift from 1st gear. does anyone have any ideas what this may be???? Could this be something simple or is this going to be a costly repair????

go to autozone, and have them pull the check engine code. they'll do that for free.

was the car inspected before you bought it? did the dealer have any kind of reconditioning program, like Gold Check?

it might need a tune-up...

No the dealership did not have anything. It is a rinky-dink dealer that sells cars that they get from auction. I didnt even want to buy the car,but my girlfriend really liked it. So I gave in...of course.

The same exact thing happened to my 94 GL wagon that I used to have. The transmission wasn't completely trashed, but there was about an 800 dollar repair bill to handle a common problem in all v6 auto taurus'.
