Interested in buying a Talon. What are the different versions/generations and what are each of their advantages/disadvantages. Also who makes this car??? I was under the impression it was a division of Chrysler buts its placed under the foreign section of the forums???

I'm not a DSM expert, so I'll let someone like Big Daddy Don reply.

Bump for you :)

Donald! get ur arse in here!

The Mitsubishi Eclipse was launched, in 1989 as a brand new 1990 model. It was one of three "sister" cars (along with the Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser)jointly produced by Mitsubishi and Chrysler by Diamond Star Motors (DSM). The Eclipse was the best of the three and is the only one that still exists today.
It was built built in the Diamond Star Motors (DSM) plant in Normal, Illinois along with its twins the Plymouth Laser and Eagle Talon. All three were front wheel drive, three door sporty hatchbacks powered by four cylinder engines. All three shared similar styling and features. But right from the beginning, the Eclipse was the most sporty and aggressive of the three. The Eclipse was available in four trim levels. The base Eclipse was powered by a 1.8 liter inline four cylinder engine. The more powerful Eclipse GS DOHC was powered by a 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine. For those wanting even more power, the Eclipse GS DOHC Turbo featured a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine. And to top it off, the top-of-the-line Eclipse GSX included the turbo charged engine and all wheel drive. Overnight, the Mitsubishi Eclipse GS Turbo and GSX were one of the fastest four-cylinder production automobiles in the world.

sweet, I had no idea they made an AWD Eclipse but that was the main thing that drew me to the Talon. How common are the AWD ones??? So this article says something about the 2nd gen being infamous for "crankwalk" What is this, will it affect me, and is there any way to fix it???

The AWD drive ones are pretty common where I live both in 1st gen. and 2nd gen. I have an AWD talon and I love it! I don't know how to explain crankwalk because I don't want to tell you wrong but I do know a way to fix it is to put the 6-bolt motor that is in the 1st gen into the 2nd gen. It will not be able to crank walk because it won't have the 2nd gen 7 bolt in it. I hope that helps.

AWD Eclipses aren't too common around here I've seen like 2 for sale but AWD Talons are really common as far as Talons go and some early 2G DSMs have this sensor mounted on the crankshaft itself. Owners that experience problems with their CAS often have problems with the crankshaft moving too much inside the engine - a situation known as crankwalk. Crankwalk is a nasty problem - unfortunately, many 2G DSMs suffer from it.

Up and down, but it's nothing to mess around with, I've never had it happen to me but I drive a 1G Talon so that's why but yeah if you let crankwalk go your car will be screwed over.

Just be gentle on the tranny. Friend's gone through 4 of them up to this point (so... about 20K miles). Mind you, he's putting out 300whp, sooo...
