the other day while driving i heard a wirring sound from the passanger side. it quit after a few minutes so didn't pay it much attention. next day tried to start and nothing happened. removed starter and it was fried and teeth were worn. put on new starter and worked great for a few days. same thing happened. I checked power on starter solenoid wire and works fine when key is turned on & off, relay in underhood fuse box also working fine. swaped a different relay and works fine. ran pick lite to relay contacts only 1 hot until ign is put in start and then 2 become hot. all normal. install 2nd new starter and started and ran fine again. few miles heard starter engaging, opened hood and pulled start relay and started disengaged, put relay in and starter would try to engage. best I can figure is somehow the relay is getting energized. Problem is tons of wires and this only happens sometimes. anybody have a schematic of starting circut or any clue as to what may be causing this?
thanks!!

I would guess ignition switch and/or corresponding wires...

My 71 Buick did the same thing. The power wire and starter wire melted on the headers, it then caused the starter to engage and chew up the teeth. I just rebuilt the starter thou. its easy. Check your wires for arcs or grounds.

Could be the ignition switch or a short somewhere.
