both headlights on my 2004 Jetta station wagon went out simultaneously. i thought it might be a fuse, but i looked and none of them seemed to be blown.
any other ideas?

are the bulbs themselves blown? or are they just not coming on?
is there a headlamp relay that you can check?

i forgot to mention that the high beams work. it's just the low beams.

I just had the exact same thing happened to my Jetta Mk III. I was driving at night and suddenly noticed a lack of light. I switched on my high beams and they worked fine.
I checked the fuses and they're still good. The high beams and the low beams are the same bulb - different filaments.
The only condition that seems worth noting is that we just had cold snap hit that day - temperatures in the low teens.
I'll let you know if I find a solution.
Update:
I checked the bulbs this morning, now that it's light outside. Both low beam filaments are busted, so it's just the bulbs that need replacing. I don't know if the fact that they both blew together might be indicative of some electrical problems.
