Hi,
I just bought an 89 trooper II it has a 2.6L 4cyl with 167K on it. The trooper runs great. The only thing I am concerned about is the timing belt I have no idea when it was last changed. So my question is if the timing belt breaks will it damage the valves or any other part of the engine?
Any info you can give would be great.
Thanks, Nick

when the engine is running, does it make any odd sounds? like a ticking noise?
pickup a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual at your local auto parts store. it should come in handy throughout your ownership of the Trooper.

if you're concerned, you can get to the timing belt, remove the cover, etc. and inspect it for wear, cracks, or fraying.

It depends if it's what's known as an interference engine or not. Most Japanese built engines that I have seen are, but then again I could be wrong. An interference engine is one that if the belt breaks, the valves will have a brawl with your pistons and goodbye engine. Either way, I don't think it'd hurt to do it anyhow if you don't know, could be a lot more expensive if you guess wrong.
