I have a 96 Yukon that isn't very dependable right now. ~Year ago changed fuel filter and fuel pump. Not fun! Recently it is not wanting to start, like it is not getting gas. If you turn it over it won't start then stop then hit the key again and most of the time it will start. It has been getting worse over time. I just changed the fuel filter again to see if it helped and it did not make any difference. Changed fuel pump relay, no difference, checked the fuel pressure and it is 53psi. Checked the wiring harness at the fuel pump plug and I have good ground and power. After I changed the relay it started right up 5-6 times in a row and I thought maybe that was it. Then I tried it again and it wants to fire up but just can't quite get there. Couple of more off and on's and it finally started. So basically I haven't figured anything out except my wallet is a little bit lighter. HELP ME!!

what condition are the ignition components in? (ALL of them)

I dont know what components your thinking but I did wires, cap, plugs about 1-1/2 yrs ago. Can you think of anything in particular I might should check?

the distributor and coil, maybe? did you replace the rotor when you replaced the cap?

if you're sure it's getting fuel to the cylinders, then the next thing to check would be if it's getting spark. that's why i asked.

hmm, does it just have trouble starting, or will it start and die right after?

I did replace the rotor at the same time as the cap. I will check tomorrow for fuel in the cylinders and also spark at the plugs. As for checking spark, I have only done this on a small engine can you tell me a good way to do this on a car. Just hold the plug to a metal part while someone else is turning it over?

the spark should really be checked with a special device.

if you're daring, you can use this method:

pull the wire off of the plug, stick a screwdriver into the end and, while holding the plastic handle, move the screwdriver so that the metal part is close to a piece of bare metal on the engine. Then get someone to crank the engine. If there is good spark you should see a spark jump from the driver to the metal. It should be able to jump a gap of almost 1/4 inch. If it makes a good spark and you can hear a "snapping" sound, the ignition system is probably OK, replace the wire, and check to see if the engine's getting fuel.

Definitely getting spark. Drove the truck this am and it quits 1/4 mile down the road. Restarted it and got in the driveway and it quits. Restarted it and it will run all day sitting still in the driveway. Any ideas besides the repair shop?

I would take it over to Parts Store and have them run the code reader on it. Maybe something like an O2 or MAS air is the root..Hard to tell without being able to drive it. Is that the TBI injection on your truck?
