Is a 1996 Geo Tracker safe to drive? I read about them flipping, swerving in the wind, etc. Whats the deal?

I don't think that is really for anyone to say.

I would test drive one and see how it handles for you, if you don't feel personally safe then don't buy one.

If you drive carefully, you'll be fine. If you don't...then as someone so eloquently put it, "shit happens."

But yes, test drive one and see for yourself. It's the best way to find out these things.

haha! my dad bought a 90 model gea metro! for 200 bucks! just for the hell of it. wow, those cars are like a faster type of go cart! great on small fast turns and good gas milage. the trackers are alright, as we had an uncle with one, but you can definitely feel the wind on you at times. he never flipped it or anything tho. so that's good. the trackers are actually hard to find around my area. especially for sale.

are you asking because of the consumer report thing? i'm not sure why but it seems like they had something out for that vehicle. they said it was likely to roll, which it is. but as long as it's driven responsibly it'll stay planted. funny thing is, they attacked it so viciously but about on the same level as most suv's put out since then. point is, it's not safe, but it's no less safe than most other suv's.

I have a '91 Tracker LSi,4X4,5-spd. It is the "Black Dragon", my daily driver, and FUN BUGGY. On dry asphalt, it handles as good as a "tuner". On WET asphalt it's lightness makes it a bit slickery. Off-road, it's a kick-in-the-butt. I frequently take my 5 yr-old grandaughters Trackin'. I can squirt between trees that a Jeep won't fit and climb 60* hills. It gets muddy on ocassion. I read the "Consumer Reports". AFTER that, I read several reports by off-road magazines - They said the Tracker was as safe as it was driven, and the vehicle "was not designed for high speed, jerk-wheel manuvers." Drive fast on sand or dirt and crank the wheel on anything and it will roll. That is why the military cancelled the Jeep and went to the Hummer. ALSO - DON'T take steep hills side-ways. The Geo was made by Suzuki for Chevy. Fixed up a bit, the Storm, Metro, and others will keep up with almost any other small car. Later (a bit at a time) the "Dragon" will be beefed, lifted, and winched. I'm running 8" rims w/ 253R75's and M /S. :3gears:
