Hiya- Have a 95 Passat with somewhat recent(40,000km?) 1.9l Turbo diesel. The turbo was replaced shortly after to fix what still is an intermitent problem of lack of power and big-time smoke, until you hit about 3500rpm. Then smoke clears up and power really kicks in. Fuel additives seem to help a bit. At one point it was rattling like crazy, so I wiggled the cold start knob in and out and the noise went away and the power returned, but it hasn't done that for awhile. Occasionally it works just fine, and is a joy to drive. Usually you have to jam the heck out of it to get it over 3500rpm after shifting to avoid the smokescreen effect. I've been told that the timing is right, and that "there is nothing wrong with your pump", however, they couldn't tell me what was going on... could it be the injectors? Why does it kick in over 3500rpm? I'm assuming that everthing else besides the block and the turbo have the 300,000 kms on them that the odometer indicates... Any ideas? thanks-
