Please specify model of your Volkswagen and its engine.
My own experiencies - Volkswagen Passat VR6 - 290.000 km without any engine fault ( only common service ).

I've heard it's very important to change the timing belts on the 1.8T engines on schedule (every 50k miles, I think?), but if it is changed regularly then failure is unlikely.

Yes, youre right - I was changing timing belts each 80000km.
My brother has disease with timing belts on Opel Calibra - only few days after he brought it. If you are not sure, if the belts was changed properly, change it immediatelly - it is cheaper than engine repair

Its better to change it before 80 000KM,. Timing belts don't show symptoms for replacement. here's a description of a timing belt. just a little info.
