I have a 96' buick skylark with the 3.1 v6. the car will start right up but will stop almost instantly. If I keep cranking for about 10 seconds after it dies it will start and stay running, but the speedometer wont work right away. after about a minute of running a the lights on the dash come on and the gages drop to 0. then all the lights on the dash go out and the gauges return to normal but the theft system light stays on. if the car is turned off the process repeats itself. any ideas?

Alternator is most likely going bad.

the altenator is only about 3 months old, however i will have it checked out. any other ideas?

Sounds like you could be having an ECM failure. It could possibly be a short in the wiring.
