Wow..... check this out:
Diesel Jag goes 1000 miles on tank of fuel
Jaguar’s new diesel XJ has managed to achieve 44 mpg in an extensive test in Britain, reports Motoring.co.za. The car traveled the length of the UK — 840 miles from John O’Groat’s to Land’s End — and then backtracked an additional 160 miles.

Pretty cool. :) The next big thing is that "gasoline Direct Injection". Although now more sites are posting a lower percentage increase in economy. Can't see how that's possible when GDI has an air/fuel ratio of at least 40:1 in the lean mode. It's more like 30% to 40% better economy and running rich is like 13.5:1 if not higher. Try doing that with a conventional engine. :)

Now if they could only cut the sulfur out of our diesel supply, so that manufacturers could market diesel-powered cars here without having them blow up or run poorly...

What do you mean, "run poorly"? They're actually quite an efficient, robust engine and they produce tons of torque. And the only thing I've heard to cause "blowing up" of a diesel engine is during the cold months is when they do the kerosen or gasoline blend to thin the diesel mix.

Essentially, the (poor) variety of diesel available in the US has caused VW non-ending problems with plugging catalysts in their TDI cars and forces them to dramatically reduce the turbo boost of those cars. VW was just on edge of pulling out the TDI engine line from the North American market because of the headache. Mercedes-Benz only offers a diesel E-class in Canada, where the fuel quality is slightly better but still really below european grades.
why do you say that? because it's a diesel?

M-B's diesel E-class that they sell here does 0-60 in 7 seconds.
