View Full Version : Crazy 70's dashboards!

I'm in the process of buying a 77 Volare. It lived most of it's life in Arizona, and on top of that, was owned for a long time by the proverbial church-and-back little old lady. So it's in great shape... only problem was, the guy who bought it from her and has owned it for a little while, brought it to Nebraska, let it sit in the snow and develope a few rust spots (it's a white car) and let his dogs sit in the interior and claw up the dash. The rust spots I can fix, no problem, but it has one of those vinyl covered foam dashes that I see so often in 70's cars. I have no clue how to get that out. :dunno:

There are huge chunks missing (like the corners around the instrument panel), so unless I can fill them with a moldable foam, simply recovering is not a possible solution. Does anyone know how much of the dash I have to remove, and how, and what material I should be using to redo the dash? Any help would be most appreciated.

I belive you are going to have to replace the whole dash pad. You might want to check with Year one see if they offer anyhting for it.

I couldn't find any on there for the Volare, but they're prices are a bit too steep for my pocketbook anyway. I found replacement pads on ebay in the neighborhood of $100, or $50 for the cover... I think I may just get the cover. I can probably take my dremel to the gouges in the old one to smooth them down to level, then come up with a nice, durable filling compound to mold the holes to a flat surface, then put a dash pad cap on it. It's at the very least, a fairly cheap temporary fix, eh?
