Ok well Hi every one-
I t is my first time posting... I am 17 and this is my first car and I really know very little about car mechanics.
It is a 1994 Volvo 850

Ok so being that I have almost no money I got the car for around $3,000 and I bought it around December from a Volvo specialist /auto imports company. The guy told me that it needed a new timing belt, but otherwise it was in perfect condition- It has about 150,000 miles on it.

So I got a new timing belt and it ran fine untill the first time I had to gas it up. It would not start. After about ten minuets I got it started. It did that for the first few times I gased it up. (I gas up with premieum because the car is older). After a while that stoped but now it stalls while its running.

I can Be completly stoped and it will stall (which it has) or going 70 on the freeway (also happened). One time the thing nearly killed me on a tight curve in a mountin pass when all of a suden I lose power everything. THAT was scary.

So I brought to a garage mechanic at a gas station I use... They said nothing was wrong with the car, but I still think they did somthing... it felt pepier but nevertheless still stalls. It only stalls about every 4 or 5 days.

Now I am on spring break so it is a perfect week to bring it in because I don't need the car to get to school. This time I decided to go with a volvo specialist and the guys i bought it from recomended a place and said they would give me a discount.

So yesterday brought the car to the mechanic. He said he would check it out. Today he calls me and tells me that there is nothing wrong with the car. He said they checked it all out the power, fuel, and he even drove it around for a while. My friend said it was probably the oxygen sensor but the mechanic said it was fine.

If any one has any info for me it would be greatly appreciated. Also the car seems to be leaking somthing from the botom... looks like oil. the mechanic said it is not worth repairing since the leak is not real bad and it would cost about $800. The ABS light is on but he said it is okay, nothing to worry about.

I was worried about a clicking noise that I heard on the car but I guess i am just being paranoid... one thing that I am not imagining is that the car DOES stall. If anyone can tell me why or maybe what I should do it would be great. Thanks alot.

Oh yeah - I am located in Los Angeles CA.

Alexmesh, If your car is dying by itself while running, Something is wrong!!
The oxygen sensor will not cause this problem as it does not afect the performance of the car it only reads what is coming out of the exhaust.
I would recommend looking in the Yellow pages & looking for a repair shop that specializes in european cars. Call them & explain to them what is happening & what has been done. Also the next time it dies try to remember EXCATLY what was happening at the time. Uphill, downhill, accelarating, decelerating, hot, cold, turning, ect. Any of that info will help out the tech that is looking at it. They also may have to drive it for a while to make it die. It's hard to fix a problem without finding it & knowing what it is.
The oil leak. If it is not leaking much(2 or 3 drops after it has beed sitting a while) it may not be worth fixing. It may be easier & cheaper to just keep a check on the oil & add when nessasary.

oh my.. sorry to say this but i think you bought a headache. but nonetheless its still a Volvo. given the proper parts and guidance by a knowledgeable Volvo mechanic, your car will be in shape in no time. but i think is would cause you a big amount.

i would recommend this online store http://www.swedishpartsshop.com/ I didn't encounter any problem transacting with them plus the prices are great too.

anyway update us to whatever happens to your car. so as we could also get ideas from your problem.

goodluck on your project.

Hi
I had a pick-up with that very same problem. It would stall out at odd times. Once on rt 80 doing 60mph,. I tried everything I could think of. The problem was so simple when I found out what it was. I had a leaf in my gas tank. Every now and then it would plug up the intake hose. After a few minutes the tank would settle and it would start up again. By-pass the gas tank. I used a VERY large Mayo jar I rigged under the hood. punched holes in the cap and ran a gas line to and from the carb. It ran great until the jar emptied. I dropped the gas tank and found the culprit. I never had a problem after that.
Hope this helps.
Bonnie
