"The 403 was made from 1977 to 1979 and used across the Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Cadillac vehicle lines. It was also used in other applications like motor homes, boats and some industrial applications. It was sort of meant to replace the previous use of big block engines in the BOP line. Stock specs on a 1977-79 403 are: 185hp@3600 RPM, 320ft/lbs torque @2200 RPM, 4.351 x 3.385 bore/stroke, 8.0:1 compression ratio."

if it had been a 60's engine your teacher could be right, they underrated the crap out of things back then. but in the 70's they smogged them to death, so 185 could be right

yeha i do have 185 n 320 pounds of tourqe. so im pretty happy. cuz the tourqe will do good. 320 pounds of tourqe stock is not bad so i can spend a lil $$$$ to get to like 300hp. which will do pretty good. my tourqe is a lil bit over 320 because i got 411 gears in my rear end so. ill just work on my hp just a lil bit n ill be satisfied

I'm a car enthusiast, my knowledge is more based in 1985 or younger, which kind of puts me out of my league.
I checked my huge car almanac, (I actually spent four hours reading the thing in a ticket line).
Sounds like CF-Mike knows hie stuff, looks like he's dead on.
Those numbers do need to be put into perspective though, over those years the legendary 350 Rocket many may know it as the 5.7L, weren't so imposing during those years either, ranging from 125 HP on the Cutlass to 175 HP.
I don't think that GM ever built another 403Cid engine, Buick's got a 401 and Pontiac's got a number of 421's back in the 60's when all of the divisions had their own engines ( I would have loved to have been around back then, but would have been so depressed to see things turn the way they have now).
The 421's of the sixties ranged from the mid-300's to the high-300's in horsepower.
It's always been my belief that horsepower numbers are really unreliable! Not only that but strictly how horsepower is calculated really gives absolutely no indication of relative strength or capable speed, it's just as flawed as speaker power wattage.
Anyhow, that's my semi-educated 2 cents.
