Hi. I have a 1997 GMC K1500 suburban bought used recently. anyways, the problem is that when turning the steering wheel to the right, it feels fine for the first 1/4 turn then it seems like it slips or turns really easy all of the sudden. It doesn't do it all the time, but doing it a bit more frequently now. any ideas? to explain a bit more, with the steering wheel in front position, top is in the 12 position, then when i turn it and that top position hits around 2 oclock position, it slips or turns really easily, border line jerk becuase it turns so easily all of the sudden. anyways, just wanted to make sure i am explaining it correctly. any help would be appreciated. thank you. :dunno:

Id go take it in for an alignment, they have to inspect all of the sterring and suspension before doing it. Its an easy way to know whats wrong, or just jack up the front and start looking while someone else moves the wheel side to side.

Its how i found out i had a bad centerlink.

We had exsactly that problem with our 99 burban first thing it was was the power steering pump. The pump has a variable pressure rate in the 96 and up models. The pressure switch is incorperated into the pump itself. The pump may infact be the source of your problem. The second point we went to after we found out the pump was basically hurt.. we replaced it with a new GM pump then about 2 months later the steering again became loose and seemed to have a lump in it of sorts. We ended up changing out the steering gear box. Per recomendation of a couple GM tech's I know I went with the AGR power steering box it is a really reasonable upgrade and promises not to have the same problem again of the worm gears wearing down. Hopefully for you it is just the pump.

But I do know exsactly what you are talking about.

And it is very un nerving to try and diagnois.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Revolution, that sounds like exactly the same thing. I will look into that this week and post to confirm or my findings if different. Thanks again.
