Kia has been without a small sport-utility vehicle in the U.S. market for the last couple of years since it discontinued the small Sportage SUV and came out with the larger Sorento SUV in its place. Now Kia will revive the Sportage name on an all-new small SUV for the 2005 model year.
This new Sportage will be a crossover vehicle, meaning that it is a sport-utility vehicle, but it is based on the platform of a passenger car, namely the recently introduced Kia Spectra. The Sportage will offer either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The standard engine will be a 2.0 liter four-cylinder, plus it is expected that a V-6 engine of about 2.7 liters will be available as an option.
These latest photos show a prototype Sportage undergoing hot-weather testing in the U.S. southwest. The size of the vehicle is similar to the Honda CR-V and the forthcoming Hyundai Tucson, which will be introduced this fall.
Look for the Kia to hit U.S. showrooms this fall as a 2005 model.
