If you have never driven the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution – better known as an “Evo” – you really are missing something. For starters, it is perhaps the best-steering production car available in America. Throw in wonderful clutch and brake feel, smooth shifting and a very willing and responsive (if a little underpowered) turbocharged four add up to one of the most rewarding-to-drive cars in existence. And there’s no worry when it comes time to bring the experience to a halt, thanks to some very powerful Brembos that slow the Evo down on a par with some of the world’s best sports cars.
The new MR version looks to make the Evo an even more enjoyable ride with the addition of a larger turbocharger for improved low- and mid-range power and an extra gear in the form of a new 6-speed gearbox. The MR also sheds about 300 pounds, thanks to a new aluminum roof and lightweight alloy BBS wheels. Improved handling is achieved with even stickier Yokohama Advan tires, revised suspension and Mitsubishi’s famous active center differential, helping to elevate its skidpad number from 0.88g in stock form to a whopping 0.98g for the MR.

And best of all, according to Sam Mitani, the MR is bound for the U.S. “This baby is definitely headed our way,” says the editor of SPEED. Look for the MR to sell for around an amazingly low $33,000.

Here’s a first look at the new Evo MR. To learn more, be sure to pick up the inaugural issue of SPEED when it goes on sale on March 30.

ha ha ha...

We get Ralliart Lancer, which is alright I guess with the 2.4 MIVEC 4 banger with 160bhp.....but with that I'd get the SE-R or a Mazda 3....

Bitch, he's gonna be a rolling-in-dough mechanical engineer in a few years, ready to roll in opulence and strike fear into mere mortals.

:wank: That's hot. What's the deal with those 8 little shark fins on the top of the rear window?

I've seen an EVO here at a dealership in the city but they tell me it has something to do with the bumper crash rating, daytime running lights and french lables on the airbags that's preventing the EVO from coming to Canada legally.

The issue is the bumper rating. Per insurance law and so on, in US a car needs to be able to pass a 2.5 mph collision with no visible damage so that one does not have to report for insurance claim. But in Canada the cars here are required to pass a 5mph collision test with the same effect. Cars like Evo with something like a big intercooler stuffed in the bumper makes it very difficult to modified to suit the 5mph test....

Oh well, the 160hp RalliArt version isn't terrible, although it's a far cry from the EVO. In the mean time we at least get the STi here which is just as fast as the EVO.
