Detroit, Michigan - The new 2005 Chevrolet Equinox compact SUV will replace the Tracker in Chevrolet's lineup but will be larger than most other compact SUV's.

"Equinox will be the largest vehicle in its class and set new standards for compact SUV functionality," said Margaret Brooks, Equinox marketing director. Based on the new Saturn VUE platform, the Equinox has the longest wheelbase (112.5 inches), and a wide stance (61.6 inches.)

One of its most distinguishing features is the Multi-Flex rear seating, which provides flexibility for passenger comfort and cargo. The rear seat slides nearly 8 inches, which provides extra room for passengers when moved back, or additional cargo space when moved forward. A fold-flat front passenger seat, combined with a split-folding rear seat, allows the Equinox to carry extra-long cargo inside the vehicle. A height-adjustable cargo shelf, with plastic on one side and carpet on the other, doubles as a security cover and a picnic table. Equinox also comes with abundant storage locations throughout, including a center front console with hidden storage compartments and integrated storage bins in the rear.

A Vortec 185 horsepower 3.4 litre V6 engine and five-speed automatic transaxle transmission are standard on all models. Equinox will be available in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A 3,500-pound towing capability is available as an option.

The on-demand all-wheel-drive system delivers power to the front wheels during normal driving conditions on dry road surfaces, and delivers power to the rear wheels if front wheel slippage is detected. The Equinox has an independent suspension: McPherson Strut front suspension and an independent four-link rear suspension with coil springs. Brakes are front disc brakes with dual piston calipers, and drum brakes in the rear. A Bosch ABS system is optional.

better than the tracker by far. Unfortunantly GM already has too many SUVs, which leads me to the question of why make more?

high demand? For now yes, but once the market turns, and it will these SUVs will be a burden for the automakers.

50%+ of new car buyers out there, car companies, wackjob envirromentalists, politicians, oil companies, legitmate envirromentalists, soccermoms, parking lot poseurs, rich yuppies, fuel misers and so on. the tracker was a fairly mediocre cute-ute; this should at least be competent even if it makes the Vue [ie the only reason to buy a Saturn nowadays] redundant.

ok, went 3-4 hours away in one of these things this past week. i was stuck in the rear. the front seats aren't so bad, i've been there before. this time i was stuck in the back though. the back seat is horribly uncomfortable, very thin padding. the interior disapoints, not only is it already falling appart, it just looks like shit. looks like cheap plastic everywhere.

friend paid 20 something for it, i think it's an 06. most my gripes are about the inside, though some outside designs leave me scratching my head.

oh....and might i also suggest that this is moved to a different section? american supercars?

yeah i know, i just thought this was the most sensible way to make slight points. being that i cannot provide a full review. i have never driven the car. it seems somewhat capable with the part time awd, but still bulky and awkward. the back seat sucks. after a week of less than 30 hours of sleep and being drunk the whole time, my 3 hour ride back home was unpleasant to say the least. the only comfortable seating position is flat against the seat, and that's hardly comfortable. i found the rear seatbelt placement to be too low, and this is from a short person. fortunately it's not adjustable.
