Fast gets faster

It may not seem long since the launch of the Evo VII, but number VIII is on the way - January 2003 for American buyers, slightly later for the UK. American dealers received their first top-secret preview in Las Vegas a week or so ago and, in the meantime, prototypes are out testing.

Our pictures indicate that Evo VIII - based on the bodyshell of the next-generation Cedia saloon (2004) - looks a little more aggressive than the VII, with a new front grille and bumper and a more swept-back rear window. There will be more substantial changes under the bonnet, however: a remapped ECU will bring power up (to an estimated 280 bhp for entry-level US models) and revised active yaw control will sharpen driving dynamics even further. GSR versions are set to receive a new six-speed manual gearbox, and stripped-out RS models will have an ultra-close-ratio five-speed box, with rally use specifically in mind.

Evo VIII will have to contend with the new Impreza WRX - on its way with less controversially-styled headlights and a power upgrade for 2003. It's going to be fun deciding which car has the edge...

Looking good...

Here sooner than I thought too. If this is correct, there should be some in showrooms right now.

The grill is a little different. Looks sorta like a Galant.

I visited the closest Mitsu dealer to me... 70mi away..

The guy I talked to was quite the idiot... He didn't know when the EVOs would hit the showrooms. However he told me the car would weigh over 3200lbs..

Can anyone put any light to that? 3200lbs is pretty ****ing heavy for an EVO. :( I hope he is wrong.

3200 may be about right for the GSR but for the almost race readdy RS it sould be lower

3200 sounds right for the GSR actually...four door all wheel drive and all...

And all that gizmo to go with it.....

The US model I heard from C&D would be a tad different without the active diff and AYC of the GSR. With tiny bit less power(5bhp?). And comes in either 5 speed auto or 5 speed manual.

AYC and active diff will be optional later in the model life...

hardcore EVO fans in the US are guessing around 170...from what Ive heard, Im not a big fan of that car though. And what are they talking about when they say "entry-level"? Do they really think the US is going to get an RS version? I really doubt thats coming, at least in the first model year...

Oh who cars now what you meant, my guess was right (or so C&D says). The EVO VIII for the US will have 275hp, probably 280lbft and a 5-speed manual and also a 5spd auto. $27k-$29k.

Turbo Legacy is also coming I guess...

280 HP doesn't sound so bad. And not too bad of a price for a new model performance car.

Evo8....hehee lol pretty ironic since Mitsubishi pulled out from WRC for the 2003 season. i wonder if Evo IV gonna make it's debut in 2004 or is it the Evo 8.5
