View Full Version : What is this Jap spec Eclipse/Talon engine I hear about...

Syclone engine or some shit... Anyway I keep hearing about it.

I plan on buying a high mileage GSX/TSi AWD sooner or later with immediate modifications in mind. Of course with the high miles I plan to have the engine replaced. A few people have mentioned this engine but I've never heard of it and the whole "jap spec Eclipse engine" makes me think these people are strait out of The fast and the furious.

Any info on the swap would be helpful... Info on both 1st and second generation TSi AWD/GSX.. All I know is that it comes with a larger turbo and I assume supporting cast. (which I'm sure will not be large enough for my needs :D).

4G63 cyclone... derived from the famed 4G63 engines... very rare coz nobody wants it... my mate got one (took him a year plus to get it) he liked it coz nobody uses it. better to get the VR-4s. a lot better than the Evo series. the engine block are a lot thicker, so reliability will be there(BTW this is no guess work, most of my mates got them since they were cheap) 240horses stock vs evos 280. but a lot better. usually these engine come from the PHAT Galant VR4.... the Cyclone come from the "not so top of the line" VR-M. my best shot? get the VR4.

its got a cyclone intake, and its got much better top end power ( also rated higher from the factory, like 220-240 hp stock ).. not many people have successfully mated the jap spec motor to an american spec chassis as everything is backward ( all engine accessories on the other side . but what you mwy want to look into is mating a jap spec intake and head to an american spec block.

almost right on the money..
the galant vr4, has a regular 4g63, but we only got it for like 3 years. its super rare, but not expensive. just remember though, we dont get the same cars/ engines that you do

but the best definitely the FTO GPX engine... the 6A12. my mate got one installed in his Proton Impian (Waja) and the thing sounded beautiful.... esp when the mivec kicks in (his was in 6000) sounded like a ****ing racing engine. when paired with HKS superflow filters.... even more amazing.
revving up to 8500rpm in stock form. i've heard one that revs up to 10000!!!
BTW not to be confused with the 6A12 24V MIVEC version which a tad less powerfull with only 175 horses. the version i'm talking about is the 6A12 DOHC MIVEC...

lol.. we dont even get the fto here, and if you want to make big power, the fto engine is the wrong direction to head in anyway.. small displacement, highly strung NA motor.. it would need major internal work to handle boost, and its close to its limit in stock form.

some ppl like NA some ppl like turbos... some ppl like 4 bangers, some ppl like V6s.... i like V6 better, they sound just nice to me. V8 is brutal but i like the humming V6. i would prefer the 6a12 because it feels like a recing engine and contarary to you guys in US, we got lots of specialist here on mitsus(and jap engines) engine. (400bhp turbocharged B18C no-NOS daily driven Civic anyone?)
I drove the Vr4 protons and V6 protons and i prefer the V6 coz of it's smooth power delivery. the 4g63 give me rush on the straight and bitches on corners (hey i got a once broken leg and and hand to prove that). BTW i'm not disagreeing with the fact that you gave but merely give the point of why i like it.

hey, we have lots of mitsu tuners/specialists here too.. i used to work for one.. and the 4g63 is one of my favorite motors of all time... its just not exactly the most reliable motor out there, even in stock form. its like a rotary in that way.. if you baby it, and maintain it meticulously, it will be the greatest experience of your life.. but if you get sloppy, you end up in deep, expensive, trouble.
