After the 2001 ALMS season which basically see the M3 GTR trashed the competition. For 2002, Le Mans' sanctioning body ACO and ALMS reinforced the homologation requirement for the LM-GT class car. The new rules for 2002 dictates that the car in GT class have to have at least 100 road going version of the race car certified for sales and use on the street. In addition, the type of the engine in the race car have to be in 1000 production version of the car. This for BMW represents a significant problem as the M3 GTR's 4 liter V8 does not share with any other BMW cars.

There is however a way to let it compete without meeting the homologation requirement. The car will have to have more weight added and the car will be significantly limited in power output.

All I gotta say is it's about time.

i dont get it.....

1000 V8 needs to in a 3series is it? there no such thing as V8 in 3.
100 production version of the car? means M3 with v8 right?

hhmmmmm...... that means weight and power restriction for next season...

M3gtr if i'm not very much mistaken is built by american right? not german, and it competes in american racing scene. BMW dont even built a car for the DTM! i dont think BMW AG will revamp it's 3 series and M3 production for just ALMS.

Schnitzer is considered a factory team and PTG is I don't know, but it's not like if the team isn't direct factory sponsored they can run whatever they want.

Not 1000 V8 in a 3, 1000 engines of this kind in any road legal certified BMW road car. And 100 V8 powered 3 have to be built and certified for street use.

And the current E46 M3 GTR is built in conjuction with Schnitzer and BMW Motorsports...

Schnitzer is a German factory team, while PTG is a North American factory team.

Yup like I said, Schnitzer was bought by BMW in the late eighties I believe, they use to do some crazy tuning before they were bought.

okay.... lemme try this...

1000 of V8 regardless of engine capavity right? so that means either a 4.0L V8, 4.4L V8 or 5L V8. coz thats as far as i know the only V8 that BMW is currently building.

for me, it's unlikely that BMW AG will revamp it's entire V8 production line just to meet the ALMS regulation. as i said, BMW even refuses to built V8s for DTM, what makes you think it will for ALMS? just because it kicked Porsche ass? if it the car is kicking Mercedes ass (like in F1) maybe BMW will do it. but for kicking Porsche ass? i dont think so...

the 100 V8 powered 3 means the M3GTR replice is it?

Let me try this one last time. 1000 V8 of similar configuration as the M3 GTR have to be in BMW's road car(regardless of model). And 100 V8 powered M3 have to be built.

If you take a look at the the speedvision thing I posted, you'll see BMW is already considering withdrawing from ALMS and maybe instead go into FIA GT.
