View Full Version : The 24 hour distance and speed record of the ZR1 has finally fallen to the.......

Quoted from a ZR1 site
"On October 14th a prototype of Volkswagen's new W12 Coupe in the final stages
of development set the world speed record for distance covered in "24 hours".
The 440 kW/600 bhp twelve-cylinder sports car covered 7,085.7 kilometres
(4,402.8 miles) at an average speed of 295.24 km/h (183.45 mph). It thus
toppled the previous record by a margin of twelve km/h (7.5 mph). In the
Volkswagen W12 Coupe capable of 350 km/h (217 mph), which had not been
specially prepared for the long-distance record bid, the team of drivers also
set two other world records (over 5,000 kilometres and 5,000 miles) and six
international vehicle class records. The class record for "12 hours" had
already been broken in a trial run.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The above report is credible.

I confirmed it this morning with John Heinricy, GM Director of Vehicle Development, and one of the team of drivers who set the previous record held by a 1990 Corvette ZR-1. The Corvette's record, set on March 2, 1990, stood for eleven years, seven months and 12 days.

At the "Gathering" event in May of 2000 at the National Corvette Museum which honored the tenth anniversary of the ZR1 Record Run, I had the honor of moderating a seminar by some of the drivers and a number of other persons associated with the Record Run. Here is an excerpt of a short speech I gave at the start of the presentation.

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ten years ago, a group of visionary Corvette enthusiasts took a slighly-modified, 1990 ZR-1 to a remote, tire test facility at Ft. Stockton Texas. Their goal was to reset the World, 24-Hour Speed Record. At the time, the "24 Hour" was the longest-standing, significant Speed Record for land vehicles. It had been set in 1940 at Bonneville, Utah by Ab Jenkins driving a purpose-built car powered by an aircraft engine and named, appropriately, the Mormon Meteor 3.

On March, 2, 1990, this group of Corvette enthusiasts and their ZR-1 were sucessful in not only setting the 24-Hour World Record, at 175.885 miles per hour, but also setting the 5000 kilometer record, at 175.710, the 5000 Mile Record, at 173.791, four other International records in class CA-G2-C10 along with a dozen or so other FIA, class records.

The ZR-1's World Record ranks as one of the greatest achievements in motorsports. Between 1940 and 1990, four, major manufacturers attempted to break this record: Ford in 1969, Mercedes Benz in 1976, Audi in 1988 and Chevrolet in 1990. Only Chevrolet, using a slightly-modified Corvette ZR-1, prepared and driven by a team of privateers, was sucessful.

Obviously, there were hundreds of people who had a part in setting these records. It would be impossible to list all of them. The key players were Tommy Morrison, who owned and managed the team, Tommy Roe who was the Crew Chief and a squad of eight drivers: John Heinricy, Scott Lagasse, Jim Minneker, Scott Allman, Don Knowles, Kim Baker, Stuart Hayner and Tommy Morrison.

So far, the ZR-1's World Records are standing the test of time. To my knowlege only one of those marks, the one-hour, has fallen. It was reset by Ferarri whose road car products, in spite of their hallowed reputations, clearly lack the reliability and durability necessary run longer than an hour at speeds above 175 mph. There have been other attempts, notably Oldsmobile with a purpose-built car, the Aerotech, which is on display in this Museum."
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok first off this wasn't me giving the speech or anything. This was a member from CorvetteForum.

I don't know whether this should go in the Euro section or the American section because I posted to discuss the ZR1 and the new W12.

THe ZR1 was the shizzy, as I have always said. For a car to achieve such a feat that has research and development dating all the way back into the 70's and 80's is remarkable! I'm still certain that the ZR1 will run easily with the best cars today and even take some of them too.

Enough with the ZR1 and on with the new. The W12 seems like a serious supercar. I think Ferrari should be seriously worried about this car if they want to make the F60 king of supercars. The W12 broke most of the records. An achievement like that is awsome itselft. With a top speed of 217mph while light and very aerodynamic this car should be tough to beat. It might be a good track as well, especially for endurance races. I'd have to look into the specs more though........ What do you guys think... (you can change this to Euro section if you want)

I think it'll be great to see the W12 at Le Mans, but that's unlikely with VAG already well represented with Audi and Bentley....

isnt it "only" supposed to be like 100-110k also?? that would be dayum impressive, but as always ferrari doesnt give a shit about top speed, they are about track performance, they will sacrafice mph for lateral g's

If in doubt - post in misc.

And yeah, its ugly.

It seems weird seeing a VW badge on such an exotic looking car.

The ZR1 was still holding the record. I recall a few years back the 550 Maranello has crushed quite a few records...

I'll have to look that up somewhere...

yeah i thought the maranello had the crown after it debuted

also i think the maranellos only modification was high speed tires...

Yeah, I'm not too crazy about that styling either. Although it is pretty plain to see that it is extremely aerodynamically sound, ya know?

The Maranello broke just one recored. That was the 100mile run. The ZR1 held that too. By the way the only mod the ZR1 had was a different transmission cooler and I think that's about it! the ZR1 still holds the production car record for these achievements because teh W12 is still in protytpe form. AS you know they only ran at 75% of it's maximum ability. I think they had an article in R&T where one of the drivers was quoted saying the hardest part of the drive was trying to find a decent radio station:eek:. Man I love the ZR1! HAHAHAHA if the guys are really serious, they should take a newer ZR1, possibly a 1995 and try to break the record again. That would be something.......

Back to the W12. THe back looks terrible on it. But you can see it's "aerodynamicall efficient". VW seems pretty serious to put into production too. I hope they do. How much power is this baby running?

The production version will be in somewhere 480 to 500. This prototype has the potential "racing" version of the engine in it with 600bhp. I'd be a good fit in the current GTS class rule....

Well so far the ZR1 still holds the production car record. I'd like to see if the production version of the W12 can pull this of.

the thing about the maranello is most of the run was done with the driver driving with one hand at ~190mph, talk about high speed stability, i love that car...

whats the top speed of a stock maranello

HeavyRightFOOT
11-20-2001, 09:18 PM
About 194mph. The ZR1 is speed limited to 185mph. Yea the Maranello is tight ass car. Loaded p with the fuel tank, tires, equipment and stuff it weighed in at a whopping 4100lbs if I rememebr for the 100mile record run. They gave is some mods though I think.

I wonder if knocking off the passenger's side mirror would give you the final 1mph?
