What do you guys think of these? I got offered an empty shell with the entire fuel system for $750. And I also located an sr20det out of an S13 sivia for $1800. What do you guys think? Personally I think that they're badass little cars and with an the sr20det it should fly. Only problem is comming up with the cash.

The 510 was a great racing car basis back in the 1970s and 1980s.

I was also talking to my friend (owns a L23 powered 510) and he was saying that people have been sticking in vg30de's. Would that make the car too front heavy? I was also thinking a 13B, but I think that it would be too expensive.

Get it. I have heard of one with an R33 GTR I-6. Dunno how it could fit, but it apparently did. I would think any engine with over say 125hp would completely pack a whalloping punch in the little devil.

Datsun 510's rule. In high school I was constantly made fun of because I loved 510's and 2002's but they are the coolest:)

that would be a quick little car, and the sr20det has alot of mod potential in it, and any amount of extra power is very noticable in a small car.

Very cool car, with a good setup being possible for cheap... but you'd get so pissed-off trying to do wiring for an SR20DET!
I'd still go for it though... I wish I had the opportunity to do a project like that...
Maybe a DET is overkill too... a KA24DE is supposed to be a more common swap... although wiring would suck there too, as it would in trying to put in a fuel-injected, computer-controlled engine in any prehistoric carbed car....

well if you didnt wanna go sr20det yo ucan just do the sr20de, which would be an even easier fit over the ka24de, i know someone mentioned the vg30 thats a pretty heavy motor, i have a vg30et (gen 1) and its fine in my car but it would put a lot of weight in the littls 510 also considering it only has like 6.5 pounds on the rear tires :) but anyway id go sr20det. rb26dett, now thats overkill...

I'd just like to throw in that 510s rock. There are two people near my house who own one, they're kick ass little cars.

Umm the Datsun 510, arent thoes little ugly box cars? Haha jus playin. You dont think im knowledgeable Yuri? Haha. Well despite my age I DO know alot about these 510s. My car isnt a L23 btw, its a LZ22 bored to 2.3L so it would be a LZ23 :) Combo of the Z22 and the L series head. Actually the Vg30 is lighter then the L series 4 cylinder I believe. I know its hard to imagine but it is. The VD30 is a GREAT engine because it provides good power and GREAT torque! Plus you can buy a kit that includes everything so it will bolt in! THe Sr20 isnt a good way to go for a couple reasons. WHat will you do for a header? People dont make headers for SR20's in 510s. I believe you also got to do oil pan mods. Also wiring, which was said before. THe good thing about the VG 30, is that its pretty compact and if you dont want to do wiring for the EFI they sell a intake manifold for Holley 500cfm 2 barrel carburetor. SO theres many clear reasons for the VG swap. You can get a rebuilt VG30 and a rebuilt transmission for about $2k or so. You get everything for the swap (motor mounts, Transmission Crossmember, custom Six quart competition oil pan, modded Oil Pickup Tube,Header Set ,Griffin Radiator & Brackets,Intake Manifold for Holley 500cfm 2 barrel Carburetor, and more goodies. Plus the website even shows you pictures and all the steps needed for the swap!
The reason I chose the LZ22 is because it is a pretty nice setup and I wanted to keep a semi-stock powerplant. BUT, now since I look at all the stuff I bought for this engine to be completed (around 4k of total parts and labor) I would have rather gone with a VG30. You can work it like this. Say 2.5k rebuilt tranny and engine. $1k for conversion parts and the rest little things. Not too shabby. I have heard people doing the swap with about $700, but thats going ghetto. You could find a nice engine at a JY maybe or find a wrecked from behind 300zx. Theres always an engine out there for you, you just got to find it. I hope this clears some stuff up.
Oah and at about 2000lbs, the 510 is a great little car! I have seen many smoke honduhs and little ricer boys. I love it! haha.
Heres a pic of the RB26DETT ::droooooooooool::

Josh cant attach images...
Anyway I never said you werent knowlegeble, in fact I know that you know more about cars than me. The reason I was asking is I cant make up my mind on which of several ways I can go.
1. Just keep putting all my money in my Lude
2. Keep my Lude as is and get Chris's body, then get an engine, etc...
3. Keep my Lude as is get a running 510 and work from there.
4. Ditch my Lude an go all out in a 510.
God damn it decisions decisions

Yea, If I were YOU. I would go 510 and keep ur Lude as a daily driver. Get a nice engine and it should be good. I mean chris's car is pretty sweet. BRE flares. THe fuel cell and stuff is worth over $400 itself and it all new. 510s are small, quick and overall pretty fun cars. Plus they are cheap, once u start talking BMW 2002 the prices double. AND we have a great shop here in Fremont that specializes in Datsun 510s.
