Lexus tops list for vehicle durability

November 16, 2001

DETROIT -- For the seventh straight year, Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury division topped an industry study on the durability of four- and five-year old cars and trucks, with fewer than half the problems of an average vehicle.

An average 1997 Lexus had 1.73 problems per vehicle, compared to 3.82 problems for the average 1997 model-year vehicle, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2000 Vehicle Dependability Study of more than 40,000 owners.

In May, Lexus also topped the 2001 J.D. Power study on initial quality, the research firm's annul survey of customer-reported problems within the first 90 days of ownership.

"Toyota, in general, one of their secrets to success is consistency, the fact that they can take the lessons learned from their Lexus line and apply it to their Toyota models," said Brian Walters, director of product research with J.D. Power. "They get tremendous advantages with that."

The Lexus LS 400 premium luxury sedan and the LX 450 full-size sport utility vehicle topped their respective vehicle segments in dependability. The Lexus SC Coupe and the ES 300 sedan also placed within the top three in their respective segments.

Toyota's U.S. sales have risen 7.3 percent this year through October, even as the rest of the industry has declined. That's allowed Toyota to gain market share, mostly at the expense of U.S. automakers.

Following Lexus among brand rankings were Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.'s Infiniti, Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar and Lincoln, and Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Acura. Only two non-luxury makes are in the top 10 - Toyota and Honda.

Four Toyota vehicles -- the Tacoma compact pickup truck, the T100 full-size pickup truck, the 4Runner sport utility vehicle and the Supra sports car -- topped their categories in dependability.

Among the combined scores for U.S. automakers, Ford's brands moved into third place behind Toyota and Honda and ahead of Nissan. General Motors Corp. ranked fifth, followed by DaimlerChrysler AG and Volkswagen AG in seventh.

LOL Volkswagon below both GM and Chrysler.

Lincoln doing well.

I don't like these surveys, though.

Because 9 out of 10 times American manufacturers perform dramatic ?

Typical is that even you are surprised VW is below Chrysler and GM...

Where the hell is the complete list btw ?

FMC was third overall, with Lincoln and Jaguar 4th and 3rd respectively... that's not bad at all. And don't say Jaguar brought up Ford's reliability rating, it was quite the opposite.

VW has often done poorly in these surveys. In one (I think in JD Power), they ranked only above Isuzu, Daewoo, and Kia. They ranked below Hyundai.

You can't really criticize the domestic's performance when they outclassed DaimlerChrysler and VW by such a large factor (3rd for Ford vs. 7th for VW).

It doesn't surprise me that Lexus is on top. Their cars have always been reliable, if nothing else. I'm surprised Infiniti was that high, though.

infinity is nissan..........and they're reliable cars.

but nobody buys them.

maybe when the skyline comes to the US and its badged under the "infinity" name.........

VW does horribly lately, I won't deny that, they are way to busy building 1200 Hp 24 cylinder engines and all that shit...and Ford has raised their standard way up, and that again is only a good thing.

But in all seriousness, within the DaimlerChrysler corporation there is still a large difference between the marques, and Chrylser does pull down the results, I've seen way too many test where Chrysler scores horribly bad, so that explains why I made that "cold" comment in reaction on Lizard King.\

I miss quite a few European marques in this list, too bad the complete list isn't available....

I expressed suprise at VW being low because I thought they scored highly on these surveys.

And no, I don't dislike the surveys because American cars can do badly in them. However, YOU will support them firmly because of that matter.

Expressing your surprise by LOL Volkswagon below both GM and Chrysler. doesn't really help you claim....

And I don't particularly support these test, hence I never post them....

God, you can be thick when you put your mind to it. You'll note that Lincoln - a luxury Ford brand, sold mostly in the US - beat out Acura, a luxury front for Honda, which you claim to be so reliable. So STFU already, Ford makes damn reliable cars. In the US as well as England.

Jaguars were considered driveway decorations for the longest time. I'm surprised that the marque made it that far up since Ford acquired them.

And whats my claim? My claim is that I'm suprised VW didn't score higher, which is what "LOL Volkswagon below both GM and Chrysler." quite blatantly shows. To those of us without cocks up our behinds, anyway.

The only thing, and I mean the ONLY thing that I don't like about Lexus is that they tend to use cheap materials in some parts of the car.......

For example, the sunroof sliding piece in the interior is a puny ass POS paper cardboard, and it's like that thruout the entire Toyota/Lexus line up.........

It makes my Honda sunnroof cover look bulletproof........... :D

Quoted from Brian Walters, product research director at J.D. Power
Some of the domestic auto makers have been getting a bum rap, but this shows their actual performance exceeds their reputation. And if you look at Ford and GM, you can see that they know how to do it right. Look at Ford with Jaguar and Lincoln; GM with Buick and Cadillac.

Cadillac also beat out Mercedes-Benz, I should add.

Cocks up our behinds ????....for somebody who flips whenever the term redneck falls, or whenever somebody makes a joke about F-bodies, you sure comment "objective"

1. I don't flip whenever the term 'redneck' falls. I just don't like my interests to be ignorantly dismissed as being only worthy of dumb hicks.

2. It seems every second post is about F bodies and many are jokes about them. If I flipped every time I'd be as up-tight as you.

3. You aren't really making sense here. I've told you what my point is and the quotes you post show exactly what I claim to say. I'll put it down to drink.
