View Full Version : Security "feature" not allowing my car to start

Well, that may be a hasty judgement on the security feature, I might be wrong. I have a 1995 Grand Prix that starts up fine 95% of the time. However, some days it won't start at all. I turn the key and nothing, no attempt to start. I took the car in to get looked at once and they kept it for a week and started it 6-7 times a day and said they had no problems starting it. I got the car back, it was fine for a month and then back to not starting occasionally.

I've seen my security light come on once so I think it has something to do with that. When the car doesn't start, I scratch the metal connectors inside the ignition and it usually will start up. However today it didn't and I sat for 20 minutes before it finally started. When it finally does turnover, it starts without a problem so it doesn't appear to be the battery or starter. Any ideas on what needs to be fixed so when I take it back to the mechanic they can fix it? Or, is there any way to disable this security feature so my car starts? Thanks for your help.

Is the starter engaging and the engine isn't turning over, or are you turning the key and absolutely nothing happens?

I turn the key and nothing happens, no attempt at a turnover appears to happen. I know little about cars so I'm not exactly sure what "starter engaging" means. From what I read though, the starter engaging would make some sort of noise??? All I can tell you is there is absoultely no noise when I turn the key (no clunking or anything, just dead). I hope that helps.

Then that is definitely security related, especially if the security light is on. Have you taken it to the dealer to see if they can help you out? Also, does your car have a remote transmitter to unlock and lock the doors and arm/disarm to factory alarm system?

It's the VAT's take it by a dealer tell them the issue that can get flashed out with a tech 2 at a GM dealer. That sounds like what it is.

I have not taken it to a dealer, just a mechanic we know who's been great in the past. I have a remote transmitter to unlock and lock the trunk. There is no alarm system. I will take it to the dealer if I run out of options.

As for anything I can do, I tried removing a few fuses that I thought might be a cause (anti-theft, etc) and that didn't work. I did put the fuses back to the original configuration. I've heard of others being able to disable the security feature but haven't found anything online. Is there a way I can disable this? This is a good car that I won't sell and will keep until it dies so there is no worry of disabling the feature and then selling to someone else. I thought I'd try and save a few bucks instead of having to take it to a dealer. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Just an update for anyone reading this looking for help. I took some rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip and cleaned the inside of my ignition (the pellets on the inside that the metal on the key touches) and I haven't stalled since. Any questions let me know. Good luck!
