GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM Daewoo) announced today the launch of its first passenger car that meets Korea’s Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (KULEV) standards, the 2006 model year Lacetti. The newest edition of GM Daewoo’s intermediate sedan goes on sale in Korea on August 8.
The 2006 Lacetti is in full compliance with the KULEV standards, which are based on the U.S. state of California’s landmark Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle standards, the most stringent in the world. This places the 2006 Lacetti among the world’s most environmentally friendly vehicles.
The 2006 Lacetti features an on-board diagnostic system (OBD), which constantly monitors and optimizes the engine’s combustion process and minimizes incomplete combustion. Contributing further to the reduction of emissions is an improved engine-control module (ECM), which together with the OBD helps achieve remarkable fuel-efficiency enhancement.
As a result, the Lacetti with a manual transmission has been upgraded to second fuel efficiency grade while versions with an automatic transmission have been upgraded to third grade. The improved fuel efficiency of the 2006 Lacetti (sedan and hatchback M/T: 14.1 → 14.4 km/l, A/T: 11.7 → 12.3 km/l) comes as an attractive bonus in times of high gasoline prices.
In addition to being an economical vehicle, the 2006 model meets the needs of the most demanding consumers through amenities such as high-grade seat fabrics, detachable cup holders, additional coat and handbag hooks, and a highly accurate fuel gauge. Safety has been further enhanced through the adoption of ABS as standard equipment in all trim levels with the exception of the base-model EX.
As of this month, GM Daewoo is replacing the Lacetti’s 1.5-liter engine with a more powerful and fuel-efficient 1.6-liter engine, with no penalty in taxation per the new displacement regulations for compact cars.
Hohyung Lee, GM Daewoo Lacetti Brand Director, said: “As a company that factors the environment into the design and development of all of our products, GM Daewoo is excited to be offering one of the very first ultra-low emission vehicle in Korea. We are confident that with its combination of lower emissions, better fuel efficiency and upgraded standard safety equipment, the 2006 Lacetti will far exceed expectations.”
As part of its online marketing promotion event ‘Four Continent World Tour with the World Car Lacetti,’ which starts on August 8 on various portal sites (Naver, Paran, Daum), GM Daewoo is offering a series of prizes including air tickets for Europe, America, Australia and China for four couples, digital cameras, car audio sets, gas coupons.
The price of the 2006 Lacetti sedan (M/T base), which comes in five trim levels, ranges from KRW 9.2 million for the EX version to KRW 12.8 million for the Diamond version. The price of the 2006 Lacetti hatchback (M/T base), which comes in three trim levels, ranges from KRW 11.1 million for the LUX version to KRW 12.6 million for the Diamond version. An automatic transmission is available for an additional KRW 1.3 million on top of the manual transmission base price.
Sold in more than 130 markets around the world, the Lacetti has received several prestigious awards at home and abroad. In Korea, the Lacetti was cited as the top domestically produced compact vehicle in the Korea Management Association’s 2003 Korean Product Quality Index. In China, the world’s fastest-growing vehicle market, it captured 14 awards and more than 10 percent of the passenger car market in 2004. In Thailand, it was named Car of the Year 2004 at the Bangkok International Motor Show. In India, it received BBC World’s Car of the Year 2003 award.
GM Daewoo Auto & Technology, based in Incheon, Korea, was established in 2002. It has five manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as an assembly facility in Vietnam. GM Daewoo products are also assembled at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India, Colombia and Venezuela. In 2004, GM Daewoo sold over 900,000 vehicles with exports to more than 150 countries. Imported GM products from the Cadillac and Saab premium brands are sold in Korea through GM AutoWorld retailers.
