View Full Version : mice in air ducts

I would like suggestions on how to keep the mice from building nests in my air ducts. I thought I needed a new blower motor, but it turned out the entire air ways were filled with debris, and the speed resistor had to be replaced. The mian expense was the labor involved to clear out the HVAC housing.
I do not have a garage. Thanks.

Gail

Find and close the hole they are getting in thru. There are rodent repellants you can spray around areas of your yard(or truck) to keep them away.

^^yes.

Also, dryer sheets (like Bounce), and steel wool, help to keep them away. Don't know why, they just can't stand the shit.... always put steel wool in my exhaust pipes before I store the SC, and put dryer sheets under the hood and in the interior... never had a problem.

Hmmm...I agree maybe a second thought on the cat. Some outdoor cat in my neighborhood jumps up and sleeps on my car and now I have claw marks all over it. A declawed cat might work because that would suck to come out in the morning and step on the snake.

+1 for bounce sheets LOL

that's messed up. use the steel wool and dryer sheets. it irritates the hell out of the mouseys hence why they hate it.

dryer sheets, okay, that sounds good. the mechanic suggested moth balls, but it's bad enough smelling the reisdue of the mouse crap, I don't want to have to smell moth balls too. You put them under the hood, where? Just leave them there, even while driving the car?

Maybe they will help with the mouse smell too, it's disgusting.

what hole? I thought they just climb up into the engine area and get to work.

You mean like the air intake valve, or whatever it is? I can close that from inside of course. I think the mechanic left it closed already, because the windows are fogging up. So now I have to remember that the intake open or shut is in reverse.

(I have yet to take my car somewhere and have everything perfect when it's done. there's always SOMETHING weird after I've had work done.)

No the HVAC system is completly sealed minute the core and blower motor.
The have gotten in thru a hole they have gnawed into somwhere.
I wouldn't take it in but im sure you have a friend or know someone who can either do it for you or help you do it.

Ive only had mice living in my frame rails and on my intake manifold during winter, some rat poisioning cured them for me but your mice are in your vent system so i dont recommend using any poisons or repellants that are harmful if not used in a well ventilated area.

You can always put traps under the car with some cheese or rodent chow and get em that way as wlel.

well geez, you'd think the mechanic would have seen a gnawed hole when he cleaned everything out.

I live in the country, so traps won't do any good. Any time something gets killed (and the hawks do hunt around here) something else just moves in to take the place.

I don't know what a frame rail is, or an intake manifold. I do know that for years I have had to weekly open the hood and clear out the mouse debris sitting on top of the cylinders and all that stuff. Not just the Stratus, but my Spirit before that. I had no idea they were in the air ways until the blower problem started. Probably it was the same with the Spirit, because I remmeber just before I had to trade her in, the heat was starting to get "iffy".

I like my Stratus okay, but that Spirit was the best car ever. Even after six years I still miss it! It had 235K when I traded it in.

Id get a rodent repellant, or even rat poisioning , but clean up the carcasses if you can, the poison is still deadly to the scavanger that finds it,

The mechanic should have found a hole, do you notice the difference in the heater from before the mice to after? intake is what you are prolly referring to as top of the cylinders, the flat piece kinda on top that they nest on.

I got tree rats( squirrels) that leave peanuts ontop of the intake in my open fenderwll cars.

Get a repellant, your tack store should have some if not an equine or livestock supply house.

Got a barn cat or two?

Where in the country do you live? I've never had those sort of problems.

I live in the Western Catskill Mountains, New York State. I don't know of anyone else that ever has this problem, though.

I bought the dryer sheets. I put one right where I always find the nest, there was a nest there already, and I only got the car back Friday afternoon. Is it the smell of the sheets they don't like? I also will remember to close the circulating air vent, when I'm not driving, in case that's where they were getting in.

Yes, there is a big difference. I was getting no fan at all, the airways were so stuffed. They had to replace the fan resistor.

There are cats around here. Also fox, skunk and hawks. Mice and moles and such get eaten all the time, but more just move in.

No, not while driving it. Only while I store it (so, whilst immobile). I place one around the ignition wires, around the blower, and wherever you think a mouse would make a 'home' lol...

I had a friend in plattsburg report a similar issue, hence why I asked...

It's not only the smell, the chemicals in the sheets irritate their skin. use more than one and put a few in your truck, under the seats, etc.

I'm not sure how they're getting in, but I'm certain that it's in the engine compartment. check around the blower motor and such and look for holes, openings, or chew marks.
