Wow this would be cool :)

GM to resurrect Chevrolet Sting Ray with 2008 model?
GM is reportedly prepping a third Kappa-platform sports car under the Chevrolet Sting Ray name, according to the February 2006 issue of Motor Trend. Its target? The BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman. “Like the Corvette, the Sting Ray would transcend GMs old divisional order,” the article explains. If it gets the green light, the Sting Ray will be a well-equipped, high-spec model, priced “far above” the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. which are also built on the Kappa architecture. The car is expected to come with a choice of engines, including a new V6, and possibly the same I4 engine featured in the new Pontiac Solstice GXP, announced this past Sunday. Why not a V8? Has GM lost it's mind? You can't bring out a car called a Sting Ray and NOT have a V8!!! What are they thinking?!?

I sure hope they plan on having an LS based motor as an option. It would be pointless not to.

But they already have a Corvette for that. It would appear with this new sports car, they're trying to fill a perceived gap below the Corvette. Putting a V8 in it would almost make it a competitor to the 'Vette, which they surely wouldn't allow.

But they are going to be SLAUGHTERED by the competiton. And they are crucifying the name "Sting Ray" by saddling it with a panty-waste 4 or 6-banger.

It's blastphemous. And if they build it, they will lose the respect of a shitload of GM faithful. Ugh! That's liek the Crossfire, pretty to look at, painfully slow...

I just hope they don't screw it up. A V8 option would be awesome-even a 5.3 to compete against the new M roadster. If they're competing with the likes of the Z4 and the Cayman, I hope they use their DOHC V6.

The Z4 is weak. But the Cayman has 295 HP and a curb weight under 3000 lbs. It will be a decent performer. And I can't think of any GM V6's that I would want to compare to the Porsche engine for performance. They HAVE to put in a V8.

The Z4 may be 'weak', but i see a lot of them roaming around. Which is what GM is more concerned about. It's going to take more than a V8 to bring that market to their dealership for this concept-a very solid fit and finish is another thing.

I agree that the use of the name "Stingray" is controversial, and it looks like they'll be using some '53-'62 Corvette styling themes too. But what is the competition? The other Kappa based cars are priced $19K-$24K, surely this one won't be much more than that. So who cares if $39K-$60K German roadsters can slaughter it, Chevy's still got the Corvette in that price range, and it's not going away.

Since Chevy and GM are clearly trying to evoke memories of their glorious past, what other name could they dredge up for this car? Bel Air? Biscayne? Corvair? Two-Ten? Deluxe Coupe? Monza? Vega? The Corvette people shouldn't be too pissed about this, since the Corvette has long since moved on and up from where it was during the Corvette Stingray days.

Actually, Monza wouldn't be a bad name...

But, as with the retro Camaro and the PT Cruiser clone, a retro '50s roadster that looks sort of like an old Corvette is another example of GM following Ford or Chrysler, only five years too late. And look how well Ford did with the Thunderbird.

GM: always late to the party...very true.

Ford's Thunderbird was quite successful in the beginning. However it fell in sales like GM's stock price.

The problem with GM isn't with their fleet, though. There are internal problems that are giving them much more grief. :shakehead
