Ok recently ive been having a noise problem under the hood. the only way i know how to describe it is it sounds like im using real thin oil so i can hear a "clickety clack" type engine sound. it annoys the hell out of me and i dont know what i can do about it.
My oil level is fine and i use the recommended oil type. is there anything i can do?
oh and its with my 01 ram 1500

maybe the lifters aren't oiling up or its an upper valve train rattle?

Sounds to me like noise coming from the valvetrain. I duno how familar you are with the idea but.. if you know where the lifters are what you can do is take a screw driver preferably a long one and put it on the intake or right at the end of the head on the intake side pushing the screwdriver against the intake or head.. then putting your ear to the handle of the screwdriver.. I know it sounds goofy but it works well. By doing this you will actually hear the clicking or lack of movement of a lifter from this you can tell if it is collapsed or about to by the sound. The screwdriver will resonate the sound and vibration from the valvetrain so you can hear it echo in the handle when you put it to your ear. My dad showed me that years ago and it works really well.
