I have a 96 Outback 2.2 litre. Over 100K miles. The ABS light comes on and stays on from start. Any advice what to check for before I have to let the SUbaru Dealership rape me..physically and financially?

How do the brakes feel? Before you do anything, fill the brake fluid up to the full mark. A lot of times your brake light / abs light will turn on if the fluid isn't 100% full.
Once you check that, if the light doesn't turn off I would take it to a brake shop and let them give you an inspection before you pay the dealer to touch the vehicle.

The brakes feel great. I just replaced the pads and as far as Im concerned I can do without the ABS. I would like to have it working, however, as thats what ABS is supposed to do lol. Thanks for the advice

I dunno how the older legacys are but the abs on wrx's is realy sensative, I ended up disabling mine, because the abs engages way to easily and when it does you just can't stop, I've had some close calls due to it, and after disengaging it i've been quite happy with the braking of the car...That and 4 pots help

For the "MY" vin # WRX/STI 02-03 there was a recal on the ABS something or other for the manual transmitions but on the Subies in general my ABS light came on when my alternator was going out on me. How is the other electronic devices and lights in the car working?

OBDII(autozone reads codes for free FYI) scan it and it will tell you, I dislike ABS, so i disabled it after it threw a code at me for a right front wheel sensor.
Hope the FYI helps.
